Big news is afoot in Washington as it seems that the US Treasury is about to step in and launch a $15billion bailout of the Small Business Administration. The plan is to use federal bailout money to buy out SBA loans. There is also talk that President Obama is to raise the cap on SBA loans.

The Washington Post has all of the information. Interestingly, it was only a week ago that we wrote that CIT must be saved and criticized the federal government’s failure to bail out CIT. Well, CIT seems like it will keep its head above water and survive. The SBA bailout is probably the best news to come out of Washington in months, and its worth noting that IFA First Vice Chairman Kenneth Walker (Driven Brands CEO), IFA Secretary Jon Luther (Dunkin’ Brands Exec. Chairman) and IFA President and CEO Matthew Shay have been holding meeting with Treasury representatives this week.

Here’s a brief run-down of the reaction to the decision.

Over on the Huffington Post, business columnist Jerry Chautin provides a
run-down of all the chatter on Twitter to the move. He quotes Stacy Kildal, owner of Advanced QB ProAdvisor, who wrote “Even if a loan/line of credit isn’t needed right now, who knows what may happen down the road? Form the relationship now.” A window as opened, Kildal and Chautin urge entrepreneurs and prospective franchisees to get out there and talk to your loan officer.

“Get an introduction to the chief loan-officer and find out how the loan committee makes its decisions. Ask how business loans are underwritten, what collateral is required and learn about the credit qualifications you need to pass muster,” Chautin writes.

Meanwhile, over on the always interesting New York Times’s You’re The Boss blog, Scott A Shane provides some charts on the decline of small-businesses in the US. One can only hope that this bailout by the federal government can reverse this trend.

Finally, the Wall-Street Journal offers small-business people tips on other routes to secure funding, beside the big loan providers. For franchisees, Advice on pursuing funding via microloans and peer-to-peer networks seems especially worth considering.

Jul. 23 - The members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) have decided to extend its present investment and trade regulations until 2010.

The group held its Ministers Responsible for Trade Meeting in Singapore this week attended by trade ministers from the 21 APEC economies.  At the top of their agenda were policy changes to improve the region’s response to the financial crisis.

Instead of adjusting trade and investment barriers at the end of this year, trade ministers have decided to maintain the status quo and hopefully wait for the markets to rebound.

“We agreed to extend the above commitment for another year, that is until 2010, and stand ready to extend this further, if necessary,” the  trade ministers attending the Ministers Responsible for Trade Meeting of APEC 2009 was quoted by Xinhua in a statement.

The group added that they will “promptly notify the WTO of any measures that fall short of these commitments.”

The trade ministers also promised to regularly evaluate their commitment to free trade and open markets by reducing barriers to trade and investment reform.

Artık, Careerjet'in diğer ülkelere özgü iş arama motoru hizmetlerinden iş arayan Türkler de faydalanabileceklerdir.

Firmanın kurucu ortağı Thomas Busch Careerjet'in diğer iş arama sitelerinden farkını şöyle belirtmektedir, “Careerjet benzersizdir, çünkü sahip olduğu iş ilanları iş arayanları 6 büyük nüfuslu kıta üzerinde (üzgünüm Antartika) iş verenlere ulaştırmaktadır.

Photo courtesy of Luc ViatourJul. 21 - The longest solar eclipse of the 21st century is scheduled to happen tomorrow and will be fully visible in certain parts of China, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Myanmar.

The phenomenon will last for as long as 6 minutes and 39 seconds. The next eclipse of its kind will occur on June 13, 2132.

According to U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the total eclipse of the sun will be seen from within a narrow corridor that traverses half of earth and the path of the moon’s umbral shadow will begin in India then will gradually cross towards China.

There will also be a partial eclipse to be seen in parts of Indonesia, East Asia, and the Pacific Ocean including the Ryukyu Islands, Iwo Jima, Marshall Islands and Kiribati. In Shanghai, China, the moon is expected to block out the sun for 5 minutes beginning 9:39 a.m. local time.

In addition to Shanghai, the total eclipse will also be visible in the Chinese cities of Chengdu, Chongqing, Yichang, Nanchong, Jingzhou, Wuhan, Huanggang, Hefei, Hangzhou, Wuxi, Huzhou, Suzhou, Ningbo and Jiaxing.

Starting around 5:28 a.m., the eclipse will be seen from the west coast of India before it passes over the eastern states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. It can also be seen in the Patna, Surat, Indore, Bhopal and Varanasi.

The event should boost tourism to the cities where the full solar eclipse can be viewed. Travel agencies, hotels and restaurants are offering visitors special tour packages and eclipse brunches to celebrate the event in style.

The JW Marriot hotel in Shanghai has a 360˚ Solar Eclipse Package that includes accommodation and breakfast while Kathleen’s 5 has a black-themed breakfast for RMB128, to name a few. Event company, Eclipse City, has even set-up an observation deck at the Yangshan Island, located about 130 kilometers from downtown Shanghai.

Last July 17, Shanghai Daily reported that China’s Cabinet instructed local government to make preparations for the solar eclipse and ensure that public facilities still run smoothly.

From Banana To NRC: Comparing Overseas Chinese and Indians

By Chris Devonshire-Ellis

Jul. 24 - Ask the average Chinese what they think of the mainland Chinese who have been educated or worked overseas and the typical response will be the politically incorrect term describing the said individual as a “banana” – meaning yellow on the outside, white on the inside.

Ask the average Indian, the same question and instead they’ll refer to the individual as an NRI or a non-resident Indian. The reasons the different responses exist – and the underlying feelings between mild mockery and respect – demonstrate the wide global integration differences that exist between the two countries.

NRI’s have existed and been acknowledged as an important source of overseas knowledge and finance in India for decades. Only recently are professional Chinese regarded in the same light. More usually, being sent overseas has had an attached stigma – often because the Chinese have themselves often been victims of trafficking. But the importance of mainland China’s growing overseas professionals is increasing.

However, with the exceptions of the foreign-educated elite, most overseas Chinese usually just come from three provinces: Guangdong, Fujian and Hainan. Moreover, many of those do not wish to return, seeking a perceived freedom in the West. Obtaining an American passport is seen as more of an incentive than remaining Chinese.

Indians however, not having the stigma of historic human trafficking or “coolie” labor, have generally dispersed with greater influence, and through historic ties with Britain, and to some extent the green card system in the United States, carry more of a cachet in India than their Chinese counterparts do.

No “coconuts” here. NRI’s are thought highly of, with many returning to India armed with knowledge and expertise gained overseas, and keen to play a part in a resurgent India. The difference is marked also in government perception and encouragement. While the Indian government actively engages NRI’s, even issuing overseas Indian ID cards to Indians who may now possess a non-Indian passport, the Chinese government has no such policy.

The Indian ID card affords a welcome home, with financial and tax benefits attached. China provides no such incentive or courtesy. It’s a mistake, as overseas nationals or even those with ethnic ties to their parent country can be valuable resources of intellect, dynamism and finance.

In total, there are about 40million overseas Chinese, mainly spread throughout South-East Asia. Many however are now second, third or even fourth generation and with family memories steeped in civil war and unrest, emotional ties to China have become largely divorced. That’s higher than the number of overseas Indians, generally regarded to being 30 million.

However, the spread of Indians overseas has been, due to links with Britain and the Commonwealth, far more diverse and spread among the West. There are extensive studies on both populations here and here.

China needs to become more mature about how it views its increasing number of overseas nationals and to encourage deeper ties to the mainland. Only by actively reaching out to the Chinese diaspora and engaging with them, and in particular the new generation, will alter the perception.

Overseas Chinese deserve more than to be known locally as “bananas. ” Only when China starts to actively recognize them as a non-resident Chinese or NRC, will the country be able to reconcile the love of the motherland with the experience of gaining knowledge and expertise from abroad.

In this regard, India’s maturity as a nation finding its place and integrating with the world remains far more advanced, a point China’s social analysts may wish to dwell upon.

British Government Redefinition Could Re-Ignite China-India Border Dispute

By Chris Devonshire-Ellis

A statement posted on the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office website last year could cause potential conflict over North-East India territories which are also claimed by China. Since the days of the British Raj, the historic border areas between Tibet, British India and China were usually coordinated by the three.

Although some conflicts remain in West China and India due to agreements made by Tibet and British India and not ratified by the Chinese, the new potential for dispute centers on the Eastern territories of India. These have based upon the Simla Accord, signed in 1913 and 1914 in which Britain only recognized the suzerainty of China over Tibet, and not sovereignty.

Suzerainty is a situation in which a region or people is a tributary to a more powerful entity which controls its foreign affairs while allowing the tributary some limited domestic autonomy. The superior entity in the suzerainty relationship, or the head of state of that more powerful entity, is called a suzerain.

The term suzerainty was originally used to describe the relationship between the Ottoman Empire and its surrounding regions. It differs from sovereignty in that the tributary has limited self-rule. This definition for Tibet has never been accepted by China.

The Simla Accord provided that the area referred to as “Outer Tibet” would “remain in the hands of the Tibetan government at Lhasa.” This region, approximately the covering today’s Tibet Autonomous Region, would be under Chinese suzerainty, but China could not interfere in its administration.

The accord with its annexes also defined lines which would designate the boundary between Tibet and China proper and between Tibet and British India, also known as the McMahon Line. However, China refused to accept the accord and their plenipotentiary, Ivan Chen, withdrew on July 3, 1914.

After his withdrawal the British and Tibetan plenipotentiaries attached a note denying China any privileges under the accord and sealed it as a bilateral agreement on the same day. This lack of a tri-party agreement is the root cause of the existing border disputes that now exist between India and China, and over which several border wars have flared.

This issue was visited again when the British foreign secretary, David Miliband, issued a ministerial statement on its website last October 29 that recognized Chinese claim over Tibet.

On the ministerial statement an Economist article published last year, reported that although the statement does explicitly recognize Chinese sovereignty, it does mean that as far as Britain is concerned: “Tibet is part of China. Full stop.”

This change in Britain’s position consequently affects India’s claim to the North Eastern territories which rely on the same Simla agreement that Britain’s prior position on Tibet’s sovereignty was based upon.

The diplomatic consequences mean that India’s claim over the state of Arunachal Pradesh is compromised, a situation that has already seen China refuse to grant a loan by the Asian Development Bank to India because of its sovereignty claims on the same territory.

The state has a population of over a million people and is agriculturally fertile. How the future of the state will be played out remains uncertain. China has a long history of being patient and is unlikely to repudiate its claims. India however views the state as historically part of India, however, any attempt to further development the state is likely to be met with strong opposition from China.

One hopes the present easing of diplomatic tensions between China and India, as demonstrated at the recent meeting of foreign ministers continues. However, the position that has now risen gives a stronger play to China’s claims and any dispute between the two nations is likely to focus on this region.

Jul. 16 – Asian markets reacted positively with the news that China’s gross domestic product grew by 7.9 percent based on the latest figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics.

The market grew by 2 percent while every major stock market in the Asian region is currently trading in the green tonight, reports the LFB-Forex.com Trade Team.

Investor optimism was also buoyed by better than expected results from major U.S. companies like Goldman Sachs and Intel. Investors have been bullish on the huge emerging Chinese market as a way of offsetting depressed demand in traditional Western markets.

So far, this has proven true in the automobile and commodities market but has yet to hold water in other industries since domestic spending in the mainland has yet to reach its peak.

Chinese growth has been fueled by Beijing’s aggressive use of its huge stimulus plan that has it funneling funds to its ailing industries but it remains to be seen whether it will be enough to nurture lasting growth and value. Will things still be as good when the stimulus money runs out?

Despite these, some analysts speculate that China may reach its goal of 8 percent GDP growth by the end of the year.

“This should give people confidence that China’s economy is on strong footing and that there are a lot better days ahead,” Alan Landau, Hong Kong-based president of Marco Polo Pure Asset Management told the AP.

“All the signs point to expansion in China. Sentiment is very positive toward China. Where else in the world right now can you find that kind of growth?”

Here are today’s results:

After commissions are factored in, I ended up with +$295.79 in profit.

I don’t have much to say as I’m usually more talkative when things go bad and I try to figure out why. Days like today, I just stuck to my rules and traded with patience. I wasn’t greedy trying to stretch profits. My entries were pretty good and the trades worked from the start. Can’t complain.

Finally resurfacing from hibernation for a couple of reasons, one of which is to note that in the relatively short time I’ve been blogging, the sheer number of blogs on WordPress has increased from about half a million to 938,000 at last check (moments ago) – if they are all updated as regularly as this one, that means there must be two or three new posts on the site every day…

Well, I’ve been busy doing, you know, other things…

In other news, celebration time as Liverpool edge out the despised Chelsea (AKA best team money can buy) to a seat in the Champions League final. Not having TSN I had to follow it on the Guardian, but it was almost as exciting. Now, if AC Milan can edge past Man United (unlikely I’d say), we’ll have a rematch of the legendary 05 final, hopefully with the same outcome, or at least as exciting a match…

I chuckled when I heard that Gordon Brown gave Tony Blair ‘ten out of ten’ for his performance as PM – his anniversary of his decade-long reign marked yesterday by seizing several more opportunities for self-congratulation – what utter political nonsense, I mean, who talks like that? Still, after Labour get crushed in the coming council elections, we’ll get a sense of the kind of score the British public give him. Between the changing of the guard in the UK and the upcoming French elections, Europol watching is more interesting than it’s been since the last German election was decided by the two main opposing parties creating a coalition…

A brief rant about the LCBO and Vintages in particular, who continue to insult my intelligence and knowledge of fair market rates. The latest offer is for a limited release of Brane Cantenac, an average-to-ok Margaux that they have the gall to price as if it was some kind of mindblowing sensory overload. Between that and their other recent Leoville Poyferre release, they must be making a killing passing off this stuff as rare – if we were in the States I could get it for about half-price. Oh wait, the exorbitant taxes on my wine consumption help to house the homeless you say, if only it were so…

I was out at Habitat last night, on Queen West, for what must rank as perhaps the best meal I’ve eaten in Toronto in quite some time. Arriving early, there was a bit of a delay which the manager put down to Microsoft problems in printing out their new menu, and as an Office veteran I believe him, but once seated we were indulged royally. I should also mention in passing that the room itself – fondly recalled as the former home of Future Bakery on Queen – is one of the most nicely appointed in the city, all dark woods and creamy cloth with large booths and tasteful music selections.

We were presented with an amuse of grilled octopus, chorizo and olive which was superb – octopus can often be unpleasantly rubbery, but here it was deftly handled, very delicate and mild, while the chorizo was spicy and a single olive – dark, smoky – balanced everything nicely.

I started with the foie gras, which was seared and served on a brioche, with a fried quail egg, a piece of double-smoked bacon and a single date, which was somehow infused with coriander seed. It was everything you imagine – fatty, sweet, indulgent – and if it wasn’t for my cardiologist’s recommendations, I would eat it every day.

My main was filet mignon, served with rainbow chard and potato rosti. Nicely plated, it went superbly with the manager’s suggestion of a glass of a big Southern French red from Pic St. Loup. The beefiness of the meat merged wonderfully with the huge structure of the wine. Up to that point, I’d been indulging in a bottle of white Corbieres, just one of many unusual options in their substantial wine list – primarily grenache blanc with a few other grapes I’d never heard of before, it was medium bodied and very enjoyable. The manager, a fellow wine geek, even went so far as to call his distributor to get me more info on this bottle, which I’d never seen before – in fact, I didn’t even know they made white in Corbieres.

Dessert sent the meal over the top, with a deconstructed apple tart a la mode, which was composed of a wedge of baked apple, an upside-down cake, and olive oil ice cream, which was deliciously subtle and oaky – it didn’t behave like regular ice cream, but was appropriately creamy and smooth. Combine that with a gratis round of late harvest Vidal from an artisanal producer here in Ontario, and you have a meal to remember.

Headed out to Koolhaus last night to catch Damon Albern’s latest incarnation, The Good, The Bad and The Queen.  While the album seems a bit mopey and introspective, the live sound was massive and dynamic, and the show was dynamite.  The band performed a fairly short set – understandable since they only have one album – with Damon and bassist Paul Simonen (ex of the Clash) alternating bandleader position.  Afrofunk legend Tony Allen laid down a rock-solid groove, and the band was accompanied by a string quartet.  All in all, a worthwhile Sunday evening.

I find Albern’s new direction to be intriguing – there’s a delicacy and deliberate anti-pop sensibility which really forces you to listen.  As the composer of some of the most absurdly catchy music of the last two decades – Blur’s Girls and Boys, almost anything by the Gorillaz – it must have taken a lot of discipline to retain the skeletal, subdued tone of GBQ.  Either way, he once again takes off in a new direction, proving himself to be the most creative voice of the (woefully named) Britpop generation.

Some of the big web personalities want to come out to play. I caught Craigslist founder Craig Newmark on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart last night, following his Der Spiegel interview of a week or so ago. He seems to be a funny and clever fellow, pointing out to Stewart that the tech billionaires he knows personally don’t seem any happier than the average person. In the newspaper interview, he goes even further in asserting independence from market forces, with his bold declaration “We often operate by what feels right or not. No business plans. We’re engineers.” Indeed, it seems that Craigslist’s tremendous success can in some ways be ascribed to the fact that it was never purchased by a big player with the intent of turning a profit (though one of the other founders did sell out to eBay some years ago, so they have a stake of some sort in the project).

Elsewhere (specifically, the Washington Post), Bill Gates provides his practical advice for “How to Keep America Competitive” – given the timing, it’s unsurprising that he suggests we all upgrade to Vista… Actually, he doesn’t, and makes a sound argument for education and immigration to help to foster traditional American innovation and excellence. It’s worth a read.

It’s weeks like the last two that make maintaining a blog rather difficult – so much happening, so many meetings, so much code to write/evaluate/re-write… between that and my busy social life, there isn’t much time at the end of the day to gather one’s thoughts into anything approaching coherence. At any rate, a brief rundown would have to at least include mention of our ever-improving API, now being written in ASP and .NET versions for all you Microsoft victims, our expanding network – we’re now returning results continent-wide from FedEx and UPS, with Dynamex soon to come – and our continuing efforts to get our second round of capital in place. As the company has grown over the last 12 months, I’m somewhat less hands-on when it comes to decisionmaking on the corporate level, as I’m busy in the trenches building the technology that the firm is valued on. That said, I am still in close contact with the partners and all decisions made are unanimous – aside from a few…

Out in the real world, I was devastated to find out that Friday’s Booka Shade concert was cancelled when the band got snowed in at NYC; it was rescheduled to Sunday, but that didn’t suit me as Monday promised to be insanely busy – I now have the dubious pleasure of having missed my favourite band in London AND Toronto. Still, we compensated somewhat beforehand by heading to the Trane Studio to see my good friend Waleed Abdulhamid kick it with his band of jazz musicians, and they were on fire that night.

I recently read this very interesting article (Nine things developers want more than money) about what motivates developers, and it got me to thinking about the kind of challenges I like to deal with, and how Shipping Pal has literally exploded over the past year or so as we transitioned from our working proof-of-concept to the actual creation of a web-enabled continent wide shipping network.  We’ve expanded our XML systems on numerous occasions as various issues arose, and I suppose the single biggest transition was from mySQL to MSSQL, which required a lot of rewriting of code as they use different commands for everything from echoing data in PHP right through to table structures and other core elements.  Now comes the API, with its attendant struggles.

My preference is for challenging, but not insurmountable, problem-solving.  Stuff that might take a while to design and build, but ultimately provides something of real value to the system.  A current example would be our new package type script, which I’m currently working on – it’s essentially an order-picking extension for our e-commerce customers, and it involves finding the optimal fit between the objects being shipped and the boxes which will contain them.  All sorts of challenges involved, since we can try cubing the whole shipment, but then if we need to resize it, it has to be in the most efficient manner possible.  I’m still working on all the details, but it’s proving intriguing, and once it’s built – and it will be built – we’ll have something really useful.

I don’t have a lot of time to post this week as we finally wrap up our API build, coming soon to www.shippingpal-api.com. In the meantime, I’ve got a lot of coding to do myself, as well as integrating all the third party work that has gotten us this far. Such dedication – I even elected to stay in last night rather than check out the Toronto debut of a band that’s been getting a fair bit of play in my iTunes, the Submarines. Oh well, they were only the opening act.

In other news, my MacBook Pro is experiencing battery issues, a total pain as I can’t afford the time to put it in for repairs, but it has only about half the battery life I had two weeks ago, and it cuts off without any warning, leaving me in the middle of a major project without a reliable, portable system. So I’m somewhat chained to my desk, which might be advantageous considering the amount of work I face in the next few days.  Strangely, running diagnostics using the hand coconutBattery app shows no problems – it’s still running at full capacity, but it dies well before the battery indicator goes into the red.

Across the web, I see that – centuries of anecdotal evidence notwithstanding – a bunch of scientists are claiming that coffee does not in fact wake you up in the morning. I don’t drink it every day, but I have in the past, and this sounds patently absurd. I know entire companies that run on the stuff, and I’m not inclined to think it a placebo…

Mercedes-Benz continues to invest heavily in research and development: “well over €1bn is committed to the truck group alone,” says MD Ian Jones, despite what he expects to be the “smallest truck market in the last 100 years”.

A dual-fuel Axor will reach the UK later this year and a dual-fuel Actros will follow – despite a forecast that UK truck registrations (above 6 tonnes) will fall by 20,000 from 2008 to 29,000 this year.

Mercedes’ expectations for the van market this year show a similarly marked fall in registrations. The large van market is forecast to fall from around 124,000 registrations last year to 97,000 this year, while the medium van market is expected to fall from nearly 68,000 registrations in 2008 to 55,000 this year.

However, van sales and marketing director Steve Bridge reveals some significant improvements to the Sprinter this summer: in July it will gain a Euro 5 engine with a van-specific, six-speed gearbox, and will benefit from a claimed fuel saving of up to 11%, a 3.5-tonne towing capability, enhanced ESP and trailer stability assist.

And a month earlier, the natural gas Sprinter will be launched. It will have a 1.8-litre supercharged petrol engine backed by a range of gas tanks.

The Vito will gain a facelift in 2010 with EU5 engines (which will also be fitted in the Viano).

Intriguingly, Mercedes-Benz Bank is conducting a feasibility study of establishing in the UK. Jones reveals: “We hope to establish a banking licence here in the UK to enable us to utilise our banking facilities to the benefit of our commercial vehicle business.”

Sometimes It Is Good To Quit And Let Things Go

FinishOften in business, and life, it is good to quit and let things go.

I quite like it when people say “winners never quit”, and I always reply with “yes they do!”. But it is when that matters, they know the right time and they are able to let go. A bit like when big businesses expand into new regions. We have seen companies lose millions from it, but instead of pushing on they realise it isn’t working and quit to focus on their home land.

A Few Examples
Yesterday I decided to cut a revenue stream from my online business which has been battered by the credit crunch. It has dived from generating over $400 per month to around $40 per month now (falling horribly over the last 6-12 months). So I’ve called it quits on it, I am very disappointed as over the next year it is thousands of pounds less in revenue that I had forecast!

In the past I’ve also lost money on shares (via spread betting). I set-up a football website hoping to dropship football memorabilia which didn’t work so I quit it. I set-up a debt books site but couldn’t make that work so I quit it. And I spent months on an ecommerce site where the dropshipper then ceased trading just as I had got going making sales, I couldn’t find another dropshipper to fill in so I just killed of the website.

The Lesson
I’m trying to show that I run my online business full-time and love it, yet I’ve had plenty of situations where I had to quit, and I’m really happy I did instead of plodding on with those ideas!

Know Why You Are Doing It
I recently finished reading a book about sharedealing. It spoke about when shares move against you and you lose money. If you researched and everything suggested it was going to rise, then it was the “right” trade, it may not have been successful but it was still in theory “right” (IE long-term you will profit). As long as you know why you are doing the trade you should not be downbeat about the trade.

The same is true for business. Know why you are doing what you are doing. If your market research shows there is a gap in the market for your product, and your costs/profit margins and other factors add up then you have a viable business on your hands. If it doesn’t work then nevermind, the research suggested it would so it was still the “right” decision to set-up the business.

If Things Aren’t Going Great, It Doesn’t Mean Quit
This relates to what I’ve just said above. If your figures add up nicely and your plans are good then you should carry on, going back to the “know why you are doing what you are doing”, if your reasons still stand true then carry on. Quitting as I’ve said is fine, but it has to be done at the right time.

Founded in 1917, the venerable Barnes & Noble retail chain appears to be well on its way out of business. My assumption is that that is not their goal, but as best I can tell, they are just throwing the grease out in front of themselves towards retail death.

Ever since I grokked Amazon in 1996, I have gotten progressively less and less interested in walking into a B&N retail store (I don’t believe I’ve ever used their online store). I think today put the final nail in the coffin for me.

B&N seems to be working to transform themselves into a “new releases” book seller. To wit, my local B&N has 4-6 rows of books that are just gone. Poof. The rows aren’t empty, but instead are now unlabeled and filled with new release stuff and/or promotional stuff. I went in this morning to find a book that might teach me how to repair rust on one of my cars. I know I need to sand it down and apply some smart chemical-y things and then prime it up so it doesn’t re-rust, but damn if I know the details. Normally I’d dig this kind of knowledge up off the inter-tubes, but I wanted something I could hold and read, with lots of photos and lots of deep discussion on alternatives and so on and so forth – not just a bullet-pointed how-to list from ‘DentFixerJerry83′ on CarBodyRepairAdvice.com.

This B&N store no longer sells any sort of automotive books, as best I can tell. In fact the entire row that used to house automotive books (and much much more) was stripped back and replaced with who knows how many linear feet of Twilight books and other related crap (what IS the attraction, anyway?). I hope whoever owns that brand is paying through the nose for the privilege. I walked all around the store – a few times (much to the chagrin of my kids) – and saw aisle after aisle that had received similar treatments.

Now I have no reason to beat B&N up for admitting they can’t profitably serve the long tail at retail. They can’t. Nobody ever could, and Amazon made that clear – as clear as an azure sky of deepest summer.

I know some of you reading this blog have never bought music, but if you’ll indulge me for a moment, imagine that people used to buy LPs and Cassettes and CDs at retail stores. Those of you with as much or more gray hair as I will remember a slew of retail music chains like Musicland, Strawberries, Sam Goody, et. al. The Musicland at the Natick Mall (back before it was the Collection, and when it was about 1/10th the size it is today!) got a lot of my lawmowing and babysitting dollars back in the 80s. Once I discovered Newbury Comics (though back then it required a trip from the ‘burbs in to Harvard Square or Back Bay), I stopped visiting the mall stores. Why? The only “long tail” I grokked back then had to do with pets and D&D, yet it was as clear as an unmuddied lake to me that there was no reason to pay high mall prices when I could get the popular stuff cheaper at Newbury while simultaneously gaining acces to a hugely more diverse selection! Never mind that going into Cambridge for the day was a great excuse to skip school ;-) . For the record (bwahahahaha), I’m still a huge Newbury Comics customer and fan.

In an identical analog, during the 90s we saw Waldenbooks and other similar (and similarly useless) mall bookstores behave likewise and ultimately disappear. B&N gobbled up or crushed them – and they deserved all the gobbling and crushing they got!

Now all indications are that B&N is working hard torepeat that history. I wish them luck.

Gotta run folks – time to visit with Amazon’s search engine…

I’ve been working my way through Sir Ken Robinson’s the Element and this evening stumbled into a brief, interesting discussion of mentorship. It seemed worth sharing. Sir Ken believes that “mentors tend to serve some or all of four roles for us [mentees]“:

  1. RECOGNITION of the subtleties and nuances that set us apart
  2. ENCOURAGEMENT – “mentors lead us to believe that we can achieve something that seemed improbable or impossible”
  3. FACILITATING – mentors can help lead us forward,”offering advice and techniques, paving the way … and even allowing us to falter … while standing by to help”
  4. STRETCHING – “effective mentors push us past what we see as our limits”

It’s an interesting framework to keep in mind as all those crazy mentors out there work on improving our skills as mentors.

FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK
I think it’s time we moved the word FUCK into the common lexicon. It’s a stellar word. It’s no less stellar than MURMUR, LILT or SCINTILLA. It’s no less useful than LAUGH, SUNLIGHT, GO or COME. I think it’s time we moved the word FUCK into the common lexicon. It’s a stellar word. It’s no less stellar than MURMUR, LILT or SCINTILLA. It’s no less useful than LAUGH, SUNLIGHT, GO or COME.

A word has only those powers that a society agrees to confer upon it.

We are in complete control of those rules.

Words, strung together, are what should move us. Words, strung together, are to be loved or feared. Words, strung together, allow us to be rational, thoughtful, entertaining, disgusting, and beyond.

There is no net-positive reason for a sole word to be conferred such capabilities.

No rational society would allow the color #4E36C8 to be assigned, explicitly or implicitly, a politeness, usability, helpfulness, or appropriateness ’score’ – thus broadly limiting or mandating its use in societal functions. Folks would need to repaint their houses, change their corporate logos, throw away lots of clothes, and revamp their schools’ art classes. Picasso’s Guernica probably couldn’t exist without #4E36C8. It’s clearly irrational.

Imagine the global good that could come from the removal of irrational societal constraints on individual words. If epithets are made powerless, it means you have to string together words to hurl a (usually pointless) insult at someone – and in so doing you are suddenly halfway towards having a conversation with them…

So can we start with FUCK? Let’s decide to make it, singly, as powerless as the four letter words DOOR, BLUE, MAKE, and SIGN.

For the long weekend ahead, an open thread for you holiday revelers looking for your gospel fix. Some things to get us started.

  • Janet Paschal has the new No. 1 song. The Talleys had a No. 1 with “Life Goes On” in last month’s issue. Good to see good music at the top of the chart.
  • Have we talked about this: Guy Penrod is billed as a “Gaither artist” for this benefit show (anybody know how Rector, AR, managed to land the Goodship Gaither?). Perhaps Penrod’s solo career all along was going to work out within the contexts of other Homecoming artists (just what the HC needs: another soloist!), so maybe I’m the one who’s off here. Anyway, and no matter, I’m always interested to see how and when Homecoming prodigals are rehabilitated.
  • L5, Booth Brothers and Greater Vision are bringing out a joint project, Jubilee. KingsGold redivivus!
  • Daniel Mount reviews Gerald Williams’ has released an autobiography, with the great title, Mighty Lot of Singing’.

What else?

What’s on your mind? Some things to occupy the time while you think.

  • Mickey Gamble over at Gospeleer thinks the Perrys have the right idea streaming live feeds of their concerts for free. My question to anyone who caught the recent webcast: what was the quality? And if you’re a diehard (what Mickey calls “followers”), does the quality of the feed matter, and how much?  I’m actually asking.
  • Speaking of Gospeleer, why does the main blog page only show one post at a time? Sort of makes it onerous on the non-daily visitor who’d like to see the most recent posts without digging into the archive. FWIW.
  • Daniel Mount has some clips of the new Inspirations. DBM says they sound better than the old Is. I’d say they sound less bad.
  • There’s going to be a big choral extravaganza - Fire in the Choir - at NQC to promote Daywind’s new choral music line (must everything rhyme?). About the same time I saw this, I noticed Roy Webb is playing the SBC convention this year. Which made me wonder, is DW doing a similar choral event for the Baptists at their big get-together? Certainly would make at least as much, maybe more, sense than doing it at NQC.
  • The oldest known instruments have been uncovered in an ancient trash pile in Germany. They’re primitive flutes made from bird bone and mammoth tusks some 75,000 years ago. You can listen to the sound of a replica here.
  • The SN is confirming what regular readers of this site have known for a while now, Terah Penhollow has left Crabb Revival.

I had a post up here earlier this evening about Greater Vision and popular taste vs being led by your creative lights. But it turns out the post was based on a bogus reading of the facts, so I took it down. The point I was trying to make about the limits of the “nobody likes it but the people” dogma in sg is worth making, but I’ll do that some other time, when I’ve got my facts right. Mea culpa. There are slight variations here (around the 3:05  mark) and here (2:45).

So what is (or, if it doesn’t have a name, should) it be called? Kingsmen in the Clutch? Cloud Formation (as in four chords and cloud of glory)? Big fat forte?

I’m back, so let’s get started on the miscellaneous stuff we’ve missed in my absence.

  • Via Adam Edwards, there’s another clip out of the Perrys singing another song from their new album live.
  • Via Musicscribe, there will, evidently, be a sg quilt at NQC.
  • For those of you who enjoy southern gospel funerals, Burke has a link to video of Eva Mae LeFevre’s memorial.
  • James D. Walbert, grandson of James D. Vaughan, and an accomplished pianist and teacher in his own right, died earlier this month (h/t, SS).
  • I thought I saw a link to story on a blog somewhere about Billboard making some change to its charting system that related to sg, but I can’t seem to find it now. If anyone has a clue what I’m talking about, chime in below.

What else should we be talking about?

While no one was looking
Judy Nelon’s GospelMusicUpdate.com is well on its way to becoming the go-to site for news from the world of southern gospel, inspo, and Christian country. Judy Nelon’s GospelMusicUpdate.com is well on its way to becoming the go-to site for news from the world of southern gospel, inspo, and Christian country.

I actually find the site difficult to navigate (it’s a bit spastically designed and the recent news often gets lost on left).

But it’s such a welcome relief to see someone exercise some editorial judgment so that personnel changes and album releases and other news of interest from gospel music isn’t muddled in with the sick, dead, newly birthed, and infirm watch from the lives of every performer’s extended family. And by placing news from the top tier of sg alongside other headlines from the adjacent worlds of inspo, CCM, and Christian country, the site implicitly imagines a place for southern gospel beyond the parochial borders that other publications help build and police.

Meanwhile, an artist friend of mine writes:

I used to sell 400 subscriptions of the SN a month at my table. Now I’m down to about 50.  How the mighty fall.

Via regular reader NG, and apropos the ongoing conversations we’ve been having about the shifting role of personality/persona in gospel music, a review of a new book about American pop and rock, provocatively titled, How the Beatles Destroyed Rock-n-Roll. It’s not at all about sg, but it may be of interest to anyone curious about the tensions in commerical music between song-driven albums and celebrity brands built on live performance. Money quote:

Wald’s tome starts and ends with them, but in between there are 16 chapters, hundreds of pages, without so much as a mention of the Fab Four.

It’s a book about the whole scope of American pop, from ragtime, swing and foxtrots to teen idols, disco and the Twist - not to mention how nightclubs replaced balls and barn dances; how radio ruined the sheet-music business; how small combos and DJs replaced dance orchestras; and particularly how records slowly became a bigger business than live music.

That switch took most of the 20th century; it was not really complete until the Beatles retired from touring into the studio. (And it might be reversing itself again now.) While dance bands were somewhat interchangeable, records are marketed on novelty and uniqueness, so a pop mentality that once centred on songs (which would often become hits in multiple versions) evolved to focus on individual musicians as artists and celebrities.

I memory this Lisa favourite song. Sound Lisa talking me little bit. Make crying stupid Yumi listen sad song.

She singer Missy Higgins come Australia. Song call it The Sound of White

Like a freeze-dried rose, you will never be,
What you were, what you were to me in memory.
But if I listen to the dark,
You’ll embrace me like a star,
Envelope me, envelope me…
If things get real for me down here,
Promise to take me to before you went away -
If only for a day.
If things get real for me down here,
Promise to take me back to the tune
We played before you went away.

And if I listen to, the sound of white,
Sometimes I hear your smile, and breath your light.
Yeah if I listen to, the sound of white ..
You’re my mystery. One mystery. My mystery. One mystery.

My silence solidifies,
Until that hollow void erases you,
Erases you so I can’t feel at all.
But if I never feel again, at least that nothingness
Will end the painful dream, of you and me…
If things get real for me down here, promise to take me to
Before you went away, if only for a day.
If things get real for me down here, promise to take me back to
The tune we played before you went away.

And if I listen to, the sound of white
Sometimes I hear your smile, and breath your light.
Yeah if I listen to, the sound of white
Sometimes I hear your smile, and breath your light.
And if I listen to, the sound of white.

I knelt before some strangers face,
I’d never have the courage or belief to trust this place,
But I dropped my head, ‘cos it felt like lead,
And I’m sure I felt your fingers through my hair…

And if I listen to, the sound of white sometimes
I hear your smile, and breathe your light.
Yeah if I listen to, the sound of white.
The sound of white,
The sound of white,
The sound of white.

Outsourcing: How It Can Benefit Your Business
"Don’t think of outsourcing only as a way to reduce your costs. While cost [...]

Understanding Outsourcing
"You don’t need to be a giant company to enjoy the benefits of outsourcing." - Source Outsourcing Defined Despite outsourcing’s increasing trend, there are still some companies that don’t clearly understand what it means. In its most basic terms, outsourcing is when a company delegates certain tasks to a resource that isn’t employed by the company. This [...]

Major Short Sale Tip

Short sales are often taking a long time, too long. And why?

Because the servicer doesn't know what you know.

And you don't know how to present things to the servicer so they practically beg you to get rid of the property, practically at any price.

This secret in this video can be used to make short sales quick and to turn them into no cash flipping opportunities.

If you can get the servicer (lender) to accept a low enough valuation, you will practically always find flipping opportunities.

Click here to register for next week's workshop. Limit 250 people

How flipping opportunities are everywhere

What if you could get the servicer to accept quite a below market valuation on the property? You could easily find someone to buy the property from you at a bit of a higher price. They would still get an extraordinary deal. And you would pocket a bunch of profit.

What if you could repeat this again and again, day in and day out?

What if you could have other agents and brokers bring you deals and what if you had to do virtually no work? Because someone else was doing ALL the work.

And someone else was putting up ALL the money.

We will be presenting a unique workshop next week, stuff nobody is using except a very select few. I got someone who has done hundreds this way to reveal what he is doing and this is dynamite, absolute dynamite, even if you aren't flipping anything and even if you never thought about doing short sales at all.

The Name-bearing Son
26 years ago, an aging and weary Masahiro–”John” since the 2nd World War–sat down next to his then 7-year-old grandson and said, “I have to talk to you about something very important.” “What?” I replied, still giggling, thinking another game was on the way. 26 years ago, an aging and weary Masahiro–”John” since the 2nd World War–sat down next to his then 7-year-old grandson and said, “I have to talk to you about something very important.”

“What?” I replied, still giggling, thinking another game was on the way.

He continued, “Well, Steven, you are my only grandson, and you have to carry on my name.”

Growing serious now, I answered, “You mean I have to become a doctor or something?”

“You should choose a good career for yourself. One that gives your family a good life. But that’s not what I mean. I mean, if you don’t have a son, our family’s name will end with you. There will be no more Nishida’s from our family.”

“Oh.” I was thinking hard now. “So what should I do?”

“You have to study hard, and get a good job, and marry a woman who respects you. And you have to have at least one son.”

“OK, I will.”

“You promise?”

“I promise. Can we play cards again?”

I learned later that Grandpa had a brother, but he died at the tender age of 19 as a Japanese naval officer. At my grandfather’s request, I journeyed to my ancestors’ hometown in Kumamoto, Japan to ensure that his brother’s and sister’s graves were being looked after. I learned more about my Nishida roots while traveling alone on that trip than I did during all the scattered chit-chat I shared with Grandpa over the years. It wasn’t just Grandpa. Kumamoto revealed to me a history and a culture I never had the good fortune of knowing as a child.

Having suffered heavy losses on both sides of a war (WWII) that tore his family apart, gramps was not exactly enamored with his Japanese ancestry, but two things finally hit home during the Kumamoto trip: 1) My grandfather was a hard and distant man, because–as the oldest son–he was forced to leave his family’s side, because it was his duty to survive in the U.S. and procreate, 2) With me, the Nishida name in our bloodline would live or die, despite my grandfather’s best efforts.

Grandpa passed away in December of 2003, not knowing whether his name was on it’s last (then) 29-year-old leg(s).

Well, if ultrasound technology and our fuddyduddy ObGyn are worth their weight in dirty diapers, I think I might have kept my promise to you Grandpa:-)

Yesterday, the Doc said, “Sure looks like a boy!”

Guest Contributor Post

I’ve stumbled on a couple of articles recently that struck a chord with some sort of half thoughts I’d been having earlier in the week. When you’re as busy as I am half thoughts are all you have time for. So I had been thinking about this prevailing sense of non-specific isolation that a few people have mentioned to me, the feeling that you’re not quite connecting as organically as you used to. I realise how much cod-psychology I threw into that last sentence but I figure if Steve is going to let me post here he’s probably factored in the amount of shite he knew I’d write.

So, this isolation. Where does it come from? Are we so de-sensitised that we can’t even empathise with our peers anymore? Now, before you start thinking that I am some sort of dreadlocked Luddite who lives in a log cabin eschewing modernity but begrudgingly using an old Windows 95 PC to contribute to a blog, I’m not. I love technology. Actually, that’s wrong, I love advances in technology, where it can go, what it can do, all this is bread and butter to me. I have a computer that is far too powerful for anything I need to use it for, I upgrade my mobile phone roughly every three months and I have a ridiculous amount of email addresses, IM names, etc etc etc. I’m like one of those annoying “You know you’re living in 2007 when…” email forwards that I seem to get ALL OF THE TIME.

So, what is all this, I hear you ask. Rants about forwards? What is this, a transcript of a 1994 Janeane Garofalo stand up routine? If it is, I reckon it would have been one of the most forward thinking of all her “pieces”, but let me get back to the this. I love technology, and I’ve just realised I’ve started two consecutive paragraphs with the word ‘So’ which is bugging me but we’ll soldier on. Anyway, there were these two articles I had read which I may have mentioned earlier. I’d rather type this explanation then scroll back up to check. But the articles, one is called 7 Reasons the 21st Century is Making You Miserable and yes I know it’s from Cracked.com which is a comedy website but sometimes, even cynical, pale, blotchy internet nerds have to take a moment to pause, to take stock. This one really had me scratching my chin and it got me mainly thinking about these issues of control I had been thinking about the week before. I mean control in the sense of, in a text message/email/IM “conversation” all of the control is in the respondent’s hands. They control the very warp and weft of the conversation. The second article I found, entitled Study: Number of close friends dropping in U.S., made me sad for two reasons. Firstly, well it’s about people having less confidantes, which is sad dudes. Secondly, I never even noticed that my subscription to the Daily Iowan had run out. It really is the only paper you need. It lets you know exactly what is going on all over Iowa every day, imagine that! That’s all you want right there.

Reading back on this, I realise it’s terrible and altogether sub par but damn it all it’s content!

Also, re: the non-specific isolation, I think it’s down to two main reasons

1) technology, too much of

2) exposure to humans, not enough of

And yes, I do realise the title doesn’t work at all either.

I’ve been expecting an on-demand book printer for a while, so I’m glad see it’s finally being done:

It’s not elegant and it’s not sexy – it looks like a large photocopier – but the Espresso Book Machine is being billed as the biggest change for the literary world since Gutenberg invented the printing press more than 500 years ago and made the mass production of books possible. Launching today at Blackwell’s Charing Cross Road branch in London, the machine prints and binds books on demand in five minutes, while customers wait.

Signalling the end, says Blackwell, to the frustration of being told by a bookseller that a title is out of print, or not in stock, the Espresso offers access to almost half a million books, from a facsimile of Lewis Carroll’s original manuscript for Alice in Wonderland to Mrs Beeton’s Book of Needlework. Blackwell hopes to increase this to over a million titles by the end of the summer – the equivalent of 23.6 miles of shelf space, or over 50 bookshops rolled into one. The majority of these books are currently out-of-copyright works, but Blackwell is working with publishers throughout the UK to increase access to in-copyright writings, and says the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

Yes, me.  I am a slacker. I admit it.

A year ago, I was planning to release my first book, “Business is Personal”.

You probably don’t remember me doing a launch promotion on it. That’s cuz I didn’t launch it.

As you might suspect, stuff happened and pushed it out of my immediate view and soon enough, a year went by.

Bet that never happened to you.

It’s still sitting in my authoring software, laughing at me: “You can’t finish me today, bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-haaaaaa” (yeah, that’s supposed to sound like an insane creepy laugh).

Enterrrrrr theeee excuuuuuuuuusee zoooooooonnnnnne (you can figure out how that is supposed to sound).

The Excuse Zone

See if any of this sounds familiar, even if you have to adjust the facts.

  • Before first light today, I headed out to Melita Island to help teach the 2nd part of Boy Scout Wood Badge. WB is an adult leadership course for Scout leaders and I am part of the instructor team.
  • The morning after I get back from Melita, I leave for Scout camp for a week.
  • The next week is 4th of July week and I have to go to a swim meet that will be a lot about remembering a dear friend who in her last 18 months of life literally willed a small town into getting a new swimming pool suitable for swim meets – all while battling pancreatic cancer.
  • Meanwhile I have client work, coaching sessions, blogging, writing my newspaper column, working on my own product development work, doing family stuff, visiting with that awfully cute granddaughter you see in that photo on the blog, a week in Missouri with the in-laws and such right after the 4th, out of town swim meets every weekend till August, then (not 100% sure on this one) 10 days in the backcountry on a wilderness pack trip.
  • That gets me to August 16 and doesn’t count other troop activities, Rotary (yes, I’m still club president), a few other volunteer gigs here in town and again, more of that client work stuff.

All the while… it sits there and taunts me. The book, I mean. You can probably hear it giggling.

Choice

You probably think “Heck, no wonder you didn’t get it done, with all THAT stuff going on.”

And you would be completely missing the point.

It has nothing to do with how much other stuff I have to do. It has to do with making a choice about the stuff I AM doing.

Each day since the Spring of 2008 when I started “Business is Personal” (the book), I’ve made a choice – several times a day.

These choices were made to do something else other than chip away at the book, even if I chose to do something that might have seemed important at the time.

No one else made these choices. Just me.

A few of my favorite Jim Rohn quotes come to mind:

  • “When you say ‘No’, you say ‘Yes’ to something more important.”
  • “Learn to say ‘No’. Don’t let your mouth overload your back.”
  • “We can no more afford to spend major time on minor things than we can to spend minor time on major things.”

What did you not get done today that you should have gotten done, if only it wasn’t for that “really important” thing you did instead?

Say “No” to the not-so-important so that you can say “Yes” to the really important.

PS: Stay tuned for the book. If you’d like to help with it, take one minute to slide on over to http://www.businessispersonalbook.com and enter a question (someone will win a pair of free consultations, may as well be you).

1) Back up all wanted files

I back up my theme, export my posts, pages and comments via the built-in Export tool. Remember, the import/export tool only works for up to 7MBs, so you may want to consider exporting your database tables separately too. I back up my full database, too using phpmyadmin (even though I know it is quite possibly the culprit)

2) Make note of all plugins you need/want to reinstall and your sidebar widget configuration (if any).

This is a good opportunity to purge your site of unused or unnecessary plugins.

3) Create your new database via phpmyadmin.

4) Create new sub-directory.

I install my new version on a sub-directory and move it over via the instructions here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory

5) Upload most current version of Wordpress and go through install (updating wp-config.php file with most new database info)

6) Upload backed up theme to wp-content/themes directory.

7) Delete “Hello World” post and “About” page.

8) Import posts, pages, and comments via built-in Import function.

9) Fix your sidebar widgets where applicable.

10) Upload fresh downloads of all plugins you want to use, activate and configure.

11) Fix permalinks.

Prison break? Probably not

Actor Lane Garrison was sent to the slammer today for a December 2006 crash that left an Armenian-American teen dead. Garrison, 27, was a star in the show "Prison Break," and now comes the inevitable punch line: He'll have three years and four months in prison to try to make life imitate art.
Garrison was driving his 2001 Land Rover when it hit a curb and struck a tree. Vahagn Setian, 17, of Beverly Hills was one of three teenage passengers in the car, and he was killed.
Here is a link to a page for the Vahagn Setian Charitable Foundation, which was created in his honor after his death. Vahagn played a wide variety of musical instruments, and the foundation is dedicated to supporting students in the performing arts.

The Forest Service reports today that it will be ending the temporary emergency closure that was put into effect for the Angeles National Forest on Oct. 23. The forest will be open again starting tomorrow (Thursday). The Angeles, along with the Los Padres, San Bernardino and Cleveland national forests closed down temporarily because of the wildfires.

Some parts of the Angeles National Forest that were damaged by the Buckweed and Ranch fires will remain closed until rehabilitation efforts are complete. This includes the Rower Flat area for off-road vehicles and Drinkwater Flat. The fire danger level in the Angeles remains extreme.

The Cleveland National Forest will re-open on Saturday.

An Armenian in Istanbul

John_Balian.jpg

Glendale police Officer John Balian is back from Istanbul, Turkey, the land of his birth. The Armenian-American Police Department spokesman spent a breezy three week vacation in Turkey, driving around in a rented Fiat with his dad. Balian grew up speaking Turkish and Armenian, with a couple other languages mixed in there. With animosity against Turkey running high because of its continued denial of the Armenian Genocide, it's sometimes forgotten that Turkey is still home to a sizable Armenian population.

Balian was born in Turkey and spent the first 6 years of his life there, going to an Armenian school affiliated with a church. His early years were spent in a middle class suburb of Istanbul called Green Village, and his father worked as an auto parts wholesaler. He remembers that his grandmother lived in front of the Bosphorous, and he remembers going out in a wooden rowboat to fish.

Armenians in Turkey talk less about the genocide than Armenians living elsewhere, Balian said. Given the Turkish government's hostility to any discussion of the genocide, Armenians in Turkey tend to reserve their discussions about the genocide to conversations with friends. Economically and socially, Armenians have been able to thrive in Turkey. But there is still descrimination, especially in government employment.

"In Turkey, you can't even be a parking checker unless you're a Turk," Balian said.

While vacationing in Turkey, Balian was able to meet family members he had never seen before. He said his Turkish relatives are prospering, with one cousin having been featured in magazines for her work as an interior designer. And Turkey is becoming more modern and continuing to orient itself toward Europe, Balian said. On one street in a tony part of town, Balian counted eight Starbucks in a quarter mile stretch. People wear the latest styles, and the streets are not totally empty when the sun sets during Ramaddan. Balian would like to see Turkey be more open to the neighbor on its eastern border: Armenia.

"My (hope) is one day to see the borders of Armenia and Turkey open up, so both countries can prosper," he said.

Still, there are twice weekly flights between Yerevan, Armenia, and Istanbul, Turkey, and on a personal level citizens from the two countries are interacting, even if the two nations stand politically opposed.

Will tell jokes for food

2005willheadshot.jpg
Well, the Tonight Show may be leaving town in a couple years, but all is not lost for fans of a good monologue. Sure, he's not as well known as Jay Leno, but Will Rogers can tell a good story. On Dec. 6, the veteran journalist will put on a one man show at the Colony Theatre in Burbank. All proceeds from the show will go to the Burbank Temporary Aid Center, a food bank for the poor.
In a press release on his Web site, Rogers explained why it's a charity show:
“Face it,” Rogers said. “A lot of people who might otherwise be interested would never buy a ticket if they thought there’s a chance the cash they’ve worked hard to amass through city redevelopment projects and rampant cronyism could ever make its way to me.”

DeGeneres dogless in Burbank

Ellen_DeGeneres.jpg

Ellen DeGeneres made a heartfelt plea during the taping of her show in Burbank on Monday. She wants her dog back, or more specifically, she wants the dog that she gave away to her hairdresser to be returned to her. You see it's not the hairdresser who has it; the dog was taken away by a rescue agency called Mutts and Moms. Ellen cried real tears, according to the Associated Press story about her on-air plea. The whole thing involves a written contract between Ellen and the rescue agency, and Ellen says she didn't read the contract carefully enough. What's this? A Hollywood star getting ripped off by not reading a contract? How could it be?

The show airs today.

Angeles National Forest closed

The Forest Service has closed the Angeles National Forest because of the wildfires. The closure went into effect today and will last "until the extreme conditions subside," according to the Forest Service.

The Forest Service says that individuals and organizations with special use permits for sanctioned activities within the Angeles National Forest are exempt from the order. The closure affects all recreational facilities, roads and hiking trails.

County roads and state highways, such as the Angeles Crest Highway (Highway 2), will remain open to through traffic. Drivers are urged to be cautious.

As someone who just went hiking Saturday in the Angeles National Forest, taking a 10-hour trek to the Bridge to Nowhere, this is disconcerting news.

Armenians support Obama

It's not only aging lions from New England like John Kerry and Ted Kennedy supporting Sen. Barack Obama. Barack mania apparently has overtaken the Armenian community, as the Armenian American National Committee of America recently announced it was throwing its support behind the senator from Illinois. The organization cited Obama's strong support for the Armenian Genocide Resolution, and his pledge to recognize the Armenian Genocide if he is elected president.

A little Warner Bros. on your wall

3001.jpg
Just in time for the holidays (OK, almost too late if you celebrate Hanukkah) Warner Bros. is offering for sale images from its collection of films and TV shows. With the launch, the studio is selling photos from 300, A Christmas Story, CHiPs, Forbidden Planet, Friends, Gilligan's Island, The Goonies, Gone With the Wind, King Kong, The Lost Boys, Nip/Tuck and The Wizard of Oz.
In a press release, the studio informs us of this handy fact: "Orders are filled on-site, in the heart of the Warner Bros. Studio lot." I don't know why that's such a big deal, but fans of the studio can know that their print passed through the hands of someone at the Burbank facility. What a thrill.
The photos are available at www.WBPhotocollection.com.

Darfur movie

DarfurNow.jpg

The Rev. Vazken Movsesian of the Glendale-based church group In His Shoes reports that the new movie "Darfur Now" has a passage featuring a postcard campaign the group did to stop the genocide in Darfur.

Last year, Movsesian went to Rwanda to chronicle the African country's 1994 genocide and to bring attention to mass killings in the Darfur region of Sudan.

Glendale tree lighting

Glendale will hold its 23rd annual Tree Lighting Ceremony on Wednesday at 7 p.m., with performances by school bands and an appearance by Santa Claus.
The outdoor event will be held at the Glendale City Hall plaza, at 613 E. Broadway. Mayor Ara Najarian will be in attendance, and musical groups from R.D. White Elementary and Hoover High will perform.

The Wireless Innovation Centre at Hillington, a key hub drawing together the disparate wireless scene in Scotland, hosted a mobile social networking event the Friday before last. The centre’s technology manager Alisdair Gunn kicked the day off by installing Andy Campbell (”Chief Networker” and CEO of Specialmove) as compere. Andy, well known in the games industry, is currently exploring Facebook as a recruitment tool. If you ever get blown out by a Facebook indiscretion, get in touch with Andy: He’s the kind of guy who will see the funny side. By way of diversion, prurient readers wishing to see the author caught in a moment of tendresse with a beautiful blonde look here.

Phil Taylor, Service Director at Strategy Analytics provided the business context - and numerous nuggets for business plan enhancement. He was followed by Richard Marshall, founder of Rapid Mobile, presenting work done with Betfair. Betfair made an interesting case study showing how the immediacy of mobile technology can tap into critical events: those where money changes hands. Mike Kinsella of Weeworld is an engaging speaker with a memorable turn of phrase. He described the company he founded prior to investment - with millions of users and five people employees - as “the world’s tallest dwarf” (which definitely demands a WeeMee ). Mike stressed the importance of understanding users and not building services that will attract “as many users as a Wigan B road”. His comment resonates with a remark made by Ian Hay at Barcamp Leeds: it’s possible to build a use case for anything - that doesn’t mean it will be useful. Frank Boyd offered a similar warning in his session on Persona development at the BBC Innovation Labs Edinburgh launch.

Emal Rumi of the Motorola European Innovation Team presented an overview of Moto’s enabling technologies for social networking. Motorola’s strong convergent technology portfolio, spanning emerging wireless technologies and the connected home, provides a natural platform for the next generation of seamless mobility applications. Hopefully this will not be under threat from the recent change of CTO and pressure for breakup into separate divisions.

So did the event live up to the promise and answer the key question: How can your company get its share of this growing market? Realistically, the best it was going to do was produce some interesting food for thought - which was duly served up. My particular problem is that, while accepting that advertising revenue will grow, I’m skeptical about the amount that can be rung out of mobile without totally trashing the user experience. It takes a shed load of cash to run the mobile network infrastructure and there is little scope for further operational efficiencies. Phil did touch on subscription services. But, although there is an argument that anything worth having is worth paying for, it may well be lost on a user base that is getting increasingly used to free. In my view, developers of mobile social networking applications will have to be a lot more subtle in their pursuit of a viable return. So, building on this, bring on the next event. How about Norman Lewis, Martin Geddes and Ian Hay?

Pubs, BBC Radio 4 iPM and the Future of Facebook

I’ve always thought that social networking sites will turn out to be like pubs: rising in popularity, going out of fashion and then being reinvented. On this basis, planning future development on the basis of Facebook’s inevitable rise does not seem prudent - strategically, this is an important issue - even before the Beacon fiasco and its envelope of fog. Eddie Mair’s Radio 4 interview on Saturday, which can be found as a Podcast here, makes interesting listening. Eddie talked about the tipping point from a perception of good to evil. From a reputation perspective, there’s certainly bad stuff coming out for Facebook right now - and more storm clouds on the horizon.

Following the classic BBC formula, Seamus McCauley forecast of impending implosion was juxtaposed with Johnny Chatterton’s more benign view. Seamus predicted the growth of sites like Kaioo, while Johnny thought that Facebook had some way to run. Neither view is wholly good news for Facebook, but then as As J.M. Keynes said: “in the long run, we are all dead”.

The 7th Mass Media, SIMs and Individuality
It’s been interesting to watch the reaction to Tomi Ahonen’s Mobile the 7th Mass Media post. You either like Tomi’s brash style and bold claims or you don’t. I do. It’s been interesting to watch the reaction to Tomi Ahonen’s Mobile the 7th Mass Media post. You either like Tomi’s brash style and bold claims or you don’t. I do. Even if he goes too far, the blog and the book are powerful antidotes to a pervading cloud of negative sentiment - often unsupported by evidence - enveloping the mobile world. A few years back, I was being told that any business plan predicated on smart phones was doomed to failure: Nokia was going to be hammered by the PDA manufacturers. There is no need for further comment - it’s pretty clear who emerged as top dog.
I would not accuse Dean Bubley of negative sentiment - and certainly never of proffering unsupported opinions (the meticulous construction of his arguments makes Dean’s Disruptive Wireless blog a pleasure to read). In his contribution to the debate on Tomi’s post Dean homes in on two potential fallacies concerning the personal nature of mobile communications. First, he points out that it is increasingly hard to define a mobile communications device. While true, this does not in itself depersonalize mobile communication. However, Dean’s second point is potentially more troubling for Tomi’s case. He points out that the one-to-one relationship between SIM, mobile number and identifiable number is breaking down. The seven items of supporting evidence including the blurring of fixed and mobile numbers, the use of SIMs in M2M, mobile devices as gateways and shared devices are at first sight compelling (careful readers will note that Dean’s first point re-emerges as item four).

So where does this leave one-to-one marketing? That depends on the assumed primacy of the SIM in identity management. Even acknowledging that the SIM will continue to play a critical role in identity management, I think its primacy is open to question. Tom Nolle’s notion on individuality is close to the vision behind Calico Jack’s Smart Presence and Context technology. Mobile can still be personal - it just getting a bit harder to do.

Suveillance Cameras, IRC, Privacy and Data Use
Catching up on Bloglines, I came across this post by Alec Saunders about proposed surveillance cameras in Ottawa. Catching up on Bloglines, I came across this post by Alec Saunders about proposed surveillance cameras in Ottawa. It evoked a strange kind of cultural dissonance: virtually every town in Britain is already a panopticon. And most people don’t think twice about the roving, all seeing eyes (there are two within sight of Calico Jack’s Dundee office). Should they? While CCTV undoubtedly does contribute to the detection and deterrence of crime, there are broader questions about how we came to this and where we are going now. Is the loss of civil liberties that surveillance cameras represent an inevitable consequence of both failures to address social fragmentation and to provide proper policing? And, if the battle against surveillance cameras is lost - sorry, Alec, I think it is - where is the current front-line in the defence of privacy?

One reason that people can live with surveillance cameras, is the assumption of anonymity provided by being unremarkable in an ocean of data. We make similar assumptions about email, phone calls, IM and IRC (Internet Relay Chat) - a group communication technology that I have always thought to be under-exploited. But now read Roi Carthy’s Techcrunch post on IRSeek, an Israeli startup that indexes IRC channels. It’s worth taking time to read Roi’s post and the IRSeek blog along with the many comments. Maybe we’re not so hard to spot in the big ocean? I don’t think that IRSeek are doing anything fundamentally wrong. In fact they have triggered an important debate, the resolution of which will assist companies such as Iotum (Alec’s company) and Calico Jack . As individuals we need to get serious about controlling use of our data and assert ownership rights. Can we blame Facebook for being cavalier with our data if we don’t treat it seriously ourselves?

Scott McNealy once said: “you have no privacy, get over it”. Although the remark was seized on as a gaff, in context it is probably a pragmatic reflection on our current situation.

Here in San Francisco, Yelp is indispensable. In NYC, I used Menupages all the time. Both are great for simple, honest, user-generated feedback of places to eat.

Often, I’m visiting the page for a restaurant I’ve already tried, just to skim through the reviews and decide what to order. Case in point, my favorite sammy shop in the whole wide world, Ike’s Place, has a ton of amazing vegetarian sandwiches on the menu. My favorite is their “Going Home For Thanksgiving” sandwich, but sometimes I want to try something new.

Wouldn’t it be neat-o if you could just look at the menu and see reviews for each item? Maybe even sort by popularity or rating? I think it would.

UPDATE: Room now taken!

One of the rooms in my apartment just opened up, and we’re looking to fill it by November 1st or sooner. We’ll start interviewing this week.

The apartment is a three bedroom in San Francisco that I share with two other people, and one of them (Jenny) started grad school and moved into school housing*.

The room is small (12′ x 13′), has a window, a large closet, and is quiet. The rent is very cheap ($550/month + utilities) and the lease is month-to-month.

  • In Duboce Triangle (seriously great, super walkable neighborhood with tree-lined streets, and lots of places to eat.) A quick walk to the Lower Haight or Castro. 2 blocks from Duboce Park (swell dog park — and the apt itself is dog-friendly.)
  • Within 3 blocks, you’ll find burritos, burgers, vietnamese and chinese, bars, a gym, and a 24-hour Safeway (grocery store)
  • Washer and Dryer in unit.
  • Bike parking in back.
  • Shared Kitchen + living room + bathroom
  • 2 blocks from the Church St. MUNI (K,M,T) and N-Judah, J-Church, F-Market, and 22.
  • Available 11/1 or sooner.
  • $550/month. (Yes, really. It’s rent controlled because my other roommate has been here for a while.)

We might be picky, but if you are awesome and are interested, email me. And if you know someone who might be interested, pass it on. Thanks!

* Jenny was going to move out a few months ago but she decided she didn’t want to give up the room and stayed on a bit longer. In the end, paying for a room she wasn’t using didn’t seem like the best idea, so now we’re looking again!

The Meyer Group plays it smart

How often have you looked for an email only to realize that it was deleted long ago? In truth, the amount of email most mailboxes currently receive is many times larger than that of previous years. Voicemail has been replaced as the primary communication medium. Many contemporary business transactions take place without a single verbal exchange. Unfortunately, the positive impact of the history trail emails provide is countered by the burden of their impermanent archival nature.

What happens when that important, irreplaceable email is no longer in your inbox? This is the question The Meyer Group recently asked when a critical email needed to be recovered. The answer: access the backup. The Meyer Group instituted an automated archival process to store copies of their emails to a server on a weekly basis. Having a backup of all your electronic communications guarantees lost emails can be retrieved in a matter of minutes. It also provides a safeguard should something disastrous befall your computer. Replacing equipment is a relatively minor challenge, but would you be able to continue working efficiently if your emails permanently disappeared?

netmanos has been helping companies such as The Meyer Group to safely keep and recover their email as well as other sensitive data. Contact us today to learn how we can help your business guard against a preventable catastrophe.

OPM's Assessment Decision Tool web application goes Live!

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) released today the second and final phase of the Assessment Decicion Tool (ADT) to the public. It can be found at http://apps.opm.gov/adt

The purpose of this project was to convert OPM’s Competency Assessment Handbook to a web-based, interactive, user-friendly format.

The conversion of the Handbook occurred in two phases. In Phase I, netmanos developed an online version of the Handbook with limited interactivity. Specifically, a website was designed and developed that provided access to the handbook material through easily updatable static HTML pages using the look and feel of OPM’s existing website. In addition, a user feedback module was included to gather information from visitors about the application and the information provided. Password protected pages were built to enable authorized users to review the survey results.

An administrator’s manual was developed to be used as a reference for content updates.

The Phase II effort was devoted to developing an interactive Assessment Decision Tool (ADT) web application. This interactive application became an extension of the online Handbook developed in Phase I.

The interactive application is driven by user-specific queries that describe individual users’ hiring situations. In simple terms, these queries can be thought of as profiles of user responses obtained by asking users questions regarding their hiring situation (e.g., target series, required competencies, budget). The queries are used to dynamically generate customized reports focused on the assessment methods and tools most appropriate for users’ hiring situations. Apart from the application, netmanos designed and developed a help menu and a frequently asked questions area that allows end users to reference functions of the tool, as well as an administrator’s module for updating the tool.

The online Handbook and Assessment Decision Tool was designed to be Section 508 compliant and its content easily updatable and modifiable by OPM.

netmanos.com adds Really Simple Syndication (RSS)

An often overlooked aspect of web site development lies within the realm of news distribution.

Countless web sites have a section in which pertinent news items are displayed. Unlike news-centric websites, whose main function is to continuously supply information, these sections are seldom updated. The problem with this scenario is that a site visitor will not return to the website once in a while hoping that there will be new information; thereby losing touch with the website. The solution is to send the news to the visitor when they become available. Enter RSS, the “newsletter” of the future.

According to Wikipedia, RSS is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines, and podcasts. An RSS document (which is called a "feed", "web feed", or "channel") contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with web sites in an automated manner that can be channeled into special programs or filtered displays.

RSS content can be read using software called an "RSS reader", "feed reader" or an "aggregator". The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed's link into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. The reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new content, downloading any updates that it finds.

We have implemented RSS for the netmanos.com website. Subscribe now by clicking on the RSS icon on your web browser.

Contact us today to find out how you can utilize the RSS technology for your website and keep in touch with your visitors.

The Healing Design helps save trees

Paper is becoming obsolete. Faxes have become emails. Statements that were previously mailed can now be found online. The Paperwork Reduction Act was established for the primary purpose of diminishing the number of documents handled by the United States government and the general public. [Full text] Conserving paper reduces the need to harvest trees. And in preserving forests, the lungs of the planet, we aid in maintaining the Earth.

Despite the current trend, the practice of expressing ourselves through the application of ink has endured. With electronic means not always within reach, and paper easily accessible, people often fall back on the age-old tradition of the scribe. Still, progress is being made.

Healing Design is an architectural firm with headquarters in Virginia. When their two main printers showed signs of impending failure, the Healing Design team took action. They contacted netmanos, inquiring about environmental friendly alternatives to their existing printing process.

Today’s equipment features intelligent ink dispensing technology that dries print quickly. This translates to more consistent results, less blotches and better quality. These new units can also print on both sides of the paper, utilizing its entire surface, even the margins. Printer upgrades can save a business both money and grief. Outmoded equipment is more likely to malfunction. Should this occur during a major job, the time and resources wasted impact deadlines and budgets. Such errors take conservation beyond a philosophical issue, and illustrate environmental concerns are often rooted in practical matters of efficiency.

Although we do not yet live in a paper-free world, small steps can make significant improvements. Combining a new printer with recycled or tree-free paper can have a noticeable effect on your business, whether your goal is to go green or just work smarter.

Contact netmanos today to find out how you can help save the world, one page at time.

OPM's Competency Assessment Handbook online version goes Live!

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has two efforts underway that are particularly relevant to the work performed. First, in June 2006, OPM introduced the Career Patterns initiative – a new approach for bringing the next generation of employees into Federal Government positions. Federal agencies will use this new approach beginning next year to build new environments to recruit potential employees. To help agencies plan and build new environments, OPM has developed the Career Patterns Guide to introduce the Career Patterns way of viewing recruiting. It presents techniques for identifying opportunities and crafting action plans to ensure employment efforts are successful. Second, OPM has a number of efforts underway to help "fix the hiring process" for the Federal Government. This effort involves providing agencies with a variety of tools and techniques to help them streamline and reform their hiring processes.

To support and further OPM’s efforts under the Career Patterns and Fix the Hiring initiatives, OPM/SHRP is developing a Competency Assessment Handbook. The Handbook will serve as a resource to agencies implementing competency-based assessment strategies to fill critical vacancies at all levels within the organization. The Handbook will provide information on various assessment tools and methods appropriate for a variety of hiring scenarios. The Handbook capitalizes on OPM’s long-standing occupational studies program that has resulted in the identification of competencies for hundreds of Federal occupations.

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) released today the Competency Assessment Handbook to the public. It can be found at http://apps.opm.gov/adt

The second phase of this project is expected to be released sometime next month.

B&M Transport Inc. saves valuable time

netmanos was recently engaged by B&M Transport Inc. to take a look at their processes and assist in an effort to streamline operations.

B&M Transport Inc. is a Wheelchair Inter Facility Transportation company with offices in Virginia and Mississippi. A major part of their operations relies on the execution of on-demand transportation services requested by various local governments through the form of lists. These lists are posted daily to a secure website.

Initially, the owner of B&M Transport Inc. was concerned about the time it was taking for the lists to be reviewed, corrected, and imported to their system. It used to take a few hours every day just to cut and paste all the customer information in each driver’s daily log; a manual process prone to errors.

netmanos provided a solution. A custom built application which extrapolates the necessary information from the government lists and seamlessly integrates it to the B&M Transport Inc. system with a single click of a button. This approach saved the administrative staff countless hours of data input and allowed them to concentrate on other essential duties.

The economic downturn has claimed another casualty:  the rewards programs offered by credit card companies.  Used to encourage credit card holders to charge purchases, these programs offered cash rebates, airline tickets, and other freebies for each dollar charged. Now banks are struggling to remain profitable and are cutting back on their rewards programs.  Airlines, too, are trimming their free mileage programs by raising the number of miles required to qualify for free tickets.

If you use a credit card that offers rewards for purchases charged, be aware of these changes. You might want to monitor your rewards more carefully than in the past and cash them in before they expire or stricter redemption rules are put into effect.

Put your tax refund to good use

Did you recently receive an income tax refund?  Here are some suggestions for making the most of it.

* Pay off consumer debt.  This is generally one of the best uses for extra cash.  For example, if you typically carry a credit card balance and pay 16% interest, you'll realize a 16% return if you pay off that debt.  You probably won't save quite as much by paying off other types of loans, but you should consider that as well.

* Contribute to an individual retirement account (IRA).  A contribution to an IRA is a good idea whether it's tax-deductible or not because IRA earnings grow tax-deferred.  If you're self-employed and show a profit for the year, you can also make a tax-deductible contribution to a Keogh plan.

* Start or add to an education fund.  Consider investing your extra money for your child's education. We can help you decide whether your education fund should be held in your name, your child's name, or in trust.  We can also make sure that you don't get snared by the "kiddie tax."

* Invest in yourself.  While planning for your family's education, don't forget yourself.  Have you put off training for new job responsibilities or a new career because you couldn't afford it?  Now that you have some extra cash, spending it on yourself may be the best investment of all.  You also may be entitled to a tax deduction for education expenses that are required by your employer or that improve the skills required on your current job.

New rules for NOLs

Essentially, a net operating loss or NOL is generated when a business has more deductions than income.

Under prior rules, a business that had an NOL could carry that loss back only two years for a refund of taxes paid in those earlier years. (The business could also choose to carry the loss forward for up to 20 years.)

The "American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009" changed the carryback period to as many as five years. The new rule applies only to 2008 net operating losses in companies with average gross receipts over the last three years of $15 million or less.

* Planning opportunities

The carry back periods of three, four, or five years are elective. That means that the taxpayer can choose how long to carry back the NOL as long as it doesn't exceed five years.

This opens up many tax planning opportunities, especially if taxable income has fluctuated significantly over the years. Not only that, it's a terrific benefit to taxpayers with NOLs larger than could be absorbed over the traditional two-year period.

As an alternative to carrying the loss back to prior years, you can still elect to forgo the carryback altogether and simply carry your losses forward to reduce future taxes.

Remember that the new NOL rules are elective, and you may choose to carry losses back as you see fit for up to five years.

There are filing and time restrictions on this tax break for businesses, so contact us if you need details and filing assistance.

"Do Not Call" doesn't prevent scammers

Registering with the National Do Not Call Registry is supposed to keep you from getting all those annoying mass marketing phone solicitations.

It appears that the current recession has brought out scam artists hungry for revenue and unconcerned about the illegality of their sales pitches.  During the first quarter of this year, the Federal Trade Commission received 450,000 complaints from those who signed up with the Do Not Call Registry, but who are still receiving unwanted calls.

Among the scams currently being pitched:  extended auto warranties, swine flu cures, debt renegotiation plans, and free lunch seminars promoting "low-risk" investments.

Be aware that the scammers are especially active right now, and be very skeptical of offers and promotions made by phone or e-mail.

How to deal with finances after a spouse's death

The death of a spouse can leave the survivor with a bewildering array of financial problems. In many families, one partner handles all the financial matters. If that partner passes away first, without having discussed and documented the couple's financial affairs, the survivor may face a steep learning curve or make poor financial decisions out of ignorance.

In many cases, the surviving spouse will be the wife. In fact, recent studies indicate that seven out of ten baby boomer wives will outlive their husbands. So getting a handle on the family's financial affairs is especially important for women.

If you're dealing with the death of a spouse, here are a few guidelines to help you navigate.

* Locate important documents. These include wills, insurance policies, deeds, investment certificates, powers of attorney, birth and marriage certificates, bank statements, and vehicle titles. You'll need these documents to change beneficiaries, revise asset titles, and verify account balances.

* Keep paying bills. Don't risk losing your good credit by neglecting ongoing expenses.

* Check survivor benefits. Contact the Social Security Administration to learn about survivor benefits. Also call your spouse's former employer to find out about employee benefits, such as payouts of unpaid salary, unused vacation, and pensions.

* Decide how you'll handle life insurance proceeds. Benefits may be paid in a lump sum or an annuity. If you take proceeds in a lump sum, you'll want to place them at least temporarily in readily available investments, such as money market accounts. Survivors often live on insurance proceeds for many years, so think twice before using the insurance money to remodel the house, pay off the mortgage, or take an expensive vacation.

* Get competent legal and financial advice. Seek out qualified and trusted professionals to help you through the process of probate, taxes, and planning for your financial future. All too often, the surviving spouse makes irrevocable financial decisions or unnecessary purchases in the days and weeks following a partner's death. Unfortunately, widows and widowers are easy prey for con artists. Someone may call with a great deal on a "sure fire" investment, or attempt to capitalize on your grief by offering unnecessary goods or services. A trusted professional advisor can provide objectivity when such "opportunities" are presented.

* Plan before a death occurs. Ideally, you and your spouse will develop a financial plan before a death occurs. One way to organize such a plan is to set up a tabbed binder that outlines the family's financial affairs. One tab might list key contacts, such as lawyers, accountants, and business associates. Another tab might disclose the location of important documents.

Discussing and documenting your financial affairs will be time well spent. If you need assistance, give us a call.

In my humble opinion its best said with this anecdote:
A young man asked Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart External how one starts composing symphonies.

“You are still young” commented Mozart. “Why don’t you start with songs?”

“But you were just 12 when you composed symphonies!”

“Of course” replied Mozart. “But I never asked how one does it!”

Things That Make You Say Ugh: -$1634.10
I had a great September, a bad October and an average November. With that said, December started off horribly wrong. I had a great September, a bad October and an average November. With that said, December started off horribly wrong. It’s not just the total loss on the day, which is pretty bad, but the thing that really makes me say “ugh” is that I keep repeating the same mistakes.

Why do I keep repeating the same mistakes? Well, because on many occasions when I do steer off course, I get bailed out and end up with profits. This helps reinforce my lack of discipline.

Today i did not get bailed out. Today, I had to endure pain for my mistakes, and rightfully so.  Let’s get to the result:

After commissions I ended the day at an abysmal loss of -$1634.10 to start the month of December.

So where did I go wrong?

Like many times when I end up with a loss, I tried to assume that I knew what the market was going to do.

In today’s case that was thinking that we would bounce off down 300 at one point in the session and I would book some easy profits. I did not have a stop loss because the trade was placed on the assumption that the market was going to bounce at some point in the day. I kept that hope alive going into the last hour and  when things started to deteriorate, I just let the loss build up. Comically so, I sold near the bottom of the day.

Not only did I lose money on this trade but I also lost other opportunities because I was “mentally stuck”  in my bounce assumption.

So it wasn’t a good day to start the month but it was good reminder to not be stupid. Back at it tomorrow.

The Week That Was: +$673.69
The first week back writing on this blog is in the books and it was a profitable one to the tune of $673.69. It would have been much better had it not been for the horrible Monday which was a blowout caused purely out of my own stupidity. I must say that it does feel good turning [...]

The first week back writing on this blog is in the books and it was a profitable one to the tune of $673.69. It would have been much better had it not been for the horrible Monday which was a blowout caused purely out of my own stupidity.

I must say that it does feel good turning thoughts into words again as it gives me a good perspective of what I am doing. I’ve been on and off with this blog for a while now but really feel like this time around it will stick especially if it proves beneficial to my trading.

Here is a quick recap of the week:

Monday: -$1634.10 [ recap link ]
I wouldn’t call what I did on Monday trading because it was not. Instead of following my plan and trading according to my rules, I placed a trade based on a thesis that never did materialize. This one day hampered my results for the week in a major way but it did serve a purpose to remind me to stay focused.

Tuesday: +$912.82 [ recap link ]
A good bounce back day which did include a risky trade at the open that panned out. The first trade set the stage for my other two trades which were also winners. Not bad at all.

Wednesday: +$705.76 [ recap link ]
My best trading day of the week. Felt comfortable and focused while following my rules like I should.

Thursday: +$338.38 [ recap link ]
This day was much harder on me emotionally than Monday until the final trade when I called it quits. I was good at cutting my losers but felt like I over traded and wasn’t picky on my entries. Even though I ended the day in the positive, my trading wasn’t good at all.

Friday: +$350.86 [ recap link ]
I felt very comfortable again, traded with patience and took good entries on the two trades I did place. Next to Wednesday, this was my best day of the week and I know it will set a positive foundation for next week.

Patience And Discipline Being Rewarded: +$705.76
Well I have basically dug myself out of the hole I was buried in on Monday, give or take a few dollars. Here’s a lesson to takeaway: So far this week I took 7 trades, which resulted in 6 winners and 1 loser yet I’m even. This goes to show you how one bad trade can ruin the [...]

Well I have basically dug myself out of the hole I was buried in on Monday, give or take a few dollars.

Here’s a lesson to takeaway: So far this week I took 7 trades, which resulted in 6 winners and 1 loser yet I’m even. This goes to show you how one bad trade can ruin the whole week. That is why it is always important to stay disciplined and always have an exit plan that minimizes the damage. Otherwise you will always end up swimming upstream.

Today’s trading results:

Very happy to report that after commissions I booked +$705.76 in profit today.

What makes me happy about my results today is that I was very patient and disciplined. I stuck to my plan and didn’t make impulsive decisions. As you will see from the AAPL chart that I posted below, I held the 2nd trade for 42 minutes and had the “urge” to close it a few times. However, before placing the trade I had a exit point of either 89.50 or 91.40. I stayed on through the bouncing around till my objective was reached. Here’s the chart:

Here is the POT trade chart:

Today was a great example of how good things happen when I stick to my plan. Now if I could just rinse and repeat this day, everyday.

Round And Round I Went On A Choppy Trading Day: +$338.34

As is the case most of the time when I trade a full day, it usually means that I am having a hard time making a profit. Today was one heck of a hard day to trade, it was chop city!

I did not help matters any by taking a loss on my first two trades before finally getting into a profitable one which was immediately followed up by another loser. I kept at it though and here are the results:

After seven total trades on the day, I was able to squeak out a profit of $338.34.

My day started off getting long GS, only to get out right before it bounced two points. Literally a minute or two later. I followed that up by trying to catch an upside move in GOOG which never did materialize. Not a good start at all.

What I did like today is that I cut my losers off and let my winners run, almost out of necessity. It is something that I’m constantly still struggling with (cutting losers) and a day like today is positive reinforcement. In all honestly I do not feel like I traded well today but because I did cut my losers I ended up in the green.

Although I must admit that on the -$431.25 SKF trade I did lower my stop a few times. Originally, it was set at 131.00 which I lowered to 130, ignored it again, and finally let it go at 129.15. Doh!

Another thing I want to touch and work on is trying to not trade during times when I see that market is chopping around. Let me explain further:

As I write this with about 20 minutes left in the trading day, I must say that the last hour was probably the best time to trade as the trend is clearly to the downside. The rest of the day was very difficult as the market just chopped around. I need to work on placing trades when there is a clear trend and not trade when the market is choppy. By the time the final hour came around, I was mentally exhausted and just happy to end the day with a profit. Thus, I missed opportunities at the end of the day.

However, I do find it difficult to not trade when I start the day with a loss. Something inside me just wants to get that money back. I need to realize that the market isn’t going anywhere and I need to be picky and choose only the best opportunities.

Unemployment numbers out tomorrow should make for some good moves in the market. Time to rest up for what should be an eventful day.

Ending The Week Quickly And Positively: +$350.86
What a difference a day makes. Yesterday I had to work my butt off to squeak out over $300 in profit. Today, on the other hand, I achieved that number in 45 minutes of trading. I made two trades, both of which were positive and decided to call it a day. One thing I’ve learned over [...]

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday I had to work my butt off to squeak out over $300 in profit. Today, on the other hand, I achieved that number in 45 minutes of trading.

I made two trades, both of which were positive and decided to call it a day. One thing I’ve learned over the years is to quit when I am content with my gains and my trading. I react badly to giving up gains and that leads me to lose my discipline. Bad habits die hard. When I am able to end a day on a positive note, it builds a good foundation for the next trading day.

Here are today’s results:

After commissions I ended the day with a nice profit of +$350.86.

Now let me show you how both trades looked like on the charts. Financials including GS looked strong off the open so I jumped in at 67.30 with a stop 1 point below. After some bouncing around it finally broke 68.50. I set my mental stop to that # and when it was hit, I exited.

I always keep an eye on SKF as it presents some great trading opportunities. My basis for the trade was that once it broke 143 this morning it would run to test 145. As you can see my thesis did come into fruition. I exited at 144.39.

Glad to end the week on a positive note and I feel very good about my trading today. Later on in the day or tonight, I will do a weekly recap post. Till then.

A survey commissioned by Click&Buy (provide online payment solutions) has turned up some interesting stats about shoppers.

Here are some interesting stats to emerge from the survey:

  • 50% of shoppers don’t complete the transaction if their preferred method of payment isn’t available
  • 40% would feel more comfortable with a retailer who offers a range of payment methods
  • 36% will shop more online than on the High Street in 2009 than 2008
  • 54% are concerned about security risks from entering credit card details online

I’ve banged on a few times in the past about increasing customer confidence, these stats are further proof their is a need for owners of ecommerce stores to pay real attention to these issues.

Website Development For Small Businesses Should Be An Ongoing Process

WWW WorkWith regards to web design, in the past I thought about whether it was best to:

  • Method 1: Record all plans and ideas, and then do lots of updates all at once. Or;
  • Method 2: Each time I get an idea or find important info on web design issues make the changes straight away

The second method means rather then spending a lump amount of time (say every 3 months) doing upgrades to your website, it is more of a continuous ongoing process.

Types Of Sites
The method you choose should be based on your type of website. If it is purely an ecommerce website then I think using method two is much better. It is a lot more flexible and if the issues will improve your sales, such as these tips, then can you really afford to wait until your next round of upgrades? Best to just get the changes done to start benefiting straight away.

Alternatively if the site in question is a blog for your business, or a related minisite you use as a feeder to your main site then I think method 1 is better. The nature of these sorts of sites means waiting to do a whole round of updates would be more beneficial as you could continuously build up ideas, and then carry them all out when you have a set amount of time available to you. And unlike with ecommerce sites the web design changes you make to these sites probably won’t have as big an impact on sales/profitability.

Conclusion
Given the points made above I think for a main ecommerce website it is definitely best to have continuous website development, because then you can be more flexible (IE when sales are quiet work on the web design) and also take advantage of the improvements right away.

I’m sure other people will have differing opinions on this but I’ve found this way best, and alternative opinions are the beauty of business :)
