Here’s a few more things to look for when you are planning your fall wardrobe:
Long Leather Gloves - I know here in Orange County, that we don’t need gloves, but if you find yourself in a cold city this fall, invest in a pair of long leather gloves. Find a pair of opera length leather gloves and pair them with shorter sleeved jackets and coats. You’ll be stylish and warm!
Piped Blazers - We’re bringing preppy back this fall with the return of the piped blazer. They are instant classics with contrasting trim that can be worn over a solid dress, with jeans, or dress pants. This blazer will add just the right amount of oomph.
Camel Time - There is nothing classier than a beautiful camel wool coat, fantastic bag, or great pair of loafers. This fall update your camel pieces and pair them with almost anything…especially the leopard prints I mention below.

In case you haven’t noticed, while we’re outside sunning ourselves on the beach or by the pool, the stores are now filled with fall merchandise. Wool skirts, coats, tights, long sleeves, they’re everywhere you look. Although you couldn’t possibly think of wearing them right now during the heat, this is a great time to buy for fall, as you have the widest variety of sizes and styles.
Here’s what to look for this fall.
Hot shades of purple and pink - find yourself a great statement clutch, a pair of shoes, a couple bangles, or a loud scarf in either of these eye popping colors. Save the head to toe look for the kids, but embrace these bold colors through your accessories to stay modern and on trend.
Cobalt blue is back! - It was in a couple years ago, and is making a come back this fall. As this is an easier color to wear than the hot pinks and purples I mentioned above, you can indulge yourself a little more. Find a great cobalt wrap dress or a wonderful winter wool skirt. You’ll be turning heads in no time.
Add a splash of leopard! - Although many other animal prints are on the market, leopard is the classic. Add a dash of leopard print in a belt, a great pair of heals, or an amazing scarf. Pair these accessories with all black or all white for a truly classic yet modern look. A little leopard goes a long way, so keep it in your accessories.

It seems that the first butterflies flitting around the garden indicate that winter is over and spring has sprung. This year spring was announced in a BIG way with a brilliant show of thousands of orange Painted Lady butterflies. Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, hundreds of butterflies a minute passed over cars, buildings, trees and people, on their northern migration from the Southern California desserts to Northern California.
The Painted Ladies do not stop flying until they run out of body fat. Then these butterflies will lay eggs, and their offspring will continue the northern migration next year into Oregon, Washington and even British Columbia. When I asked my niece if she saw the butterflies she said the children at school spent the entire recess running around the playground chasing them.
The butterflies’ multi-year migration is similar to that of their cousins, the Monarch Butterfly, who begin their migration in Mexico and over three generations eventually migrate to Canada. Then the fourth generation returns to Mexico in one continuous flight.
It is amazing to me that these small, beautiful creatures can posses the navigational skills, strength and tenacity to continue a journey of thousands of miles.
(Wo)Man vs. Wild Butterflies: These butterflies know how to avoid predators! Every time I even got close to the flower bush in hopes of capturing 8 or 10 in a photo, most would take off and flutter away. I still managed to snap four in this photo, and I considered myself lucky. All the rest were in the air above the flowers. They weren’t ready to leave these tasty African Daisies, but they weren’t taking any chances either. I was just happy to be gardening with them nearby.
It has been fun having the butterflies paint the town!

Turn a Snail into a Business Card Holder
You’ve seen those blogs that tell you how to make a business card case out of a cassette tape, recycled circuitboard or Popsicle sticks. But I’ll show you how to make a cool business card holder out of a snail. Yes, a snail. In three easy steps! 1. Snails come in so many different colors if [...]

Pick the snail that appeals most to you. Green with golden highlights or brown with silver highlights.
You’ve seen those blogs that tell you how to make a business card case out of a cassette tape, recycled circuitboard or Popsicle sticks. But I’ll show you how to make a cool business card holder out of a snail. Yes, a snail. In three easy steps!
1. Snails come in so many different colors if you look carefully. Here are two of my favorites. For this example I narrowed it down to a snail with a beautiful amber shell with silvery highlights or a green snail with golden highlights.
2. I settled on the brown snail for this demonstration. The next step is choosing the right classic metal business card holder. Choices include silver, gold or black. I think the brown snail looks especially nice against the black business card holder, so that’s what I’m going to use. I’ve also chosen the thick business cards holder because it is so practical. The matte black finish really hides dirt, fingerprints and snail guts, plus the deep size lets me hold more business cards and credit cards.
3. You want your card case to have a really slim profile, so place the silver and brown snail on the black case and smoosh hard. That’s all it takes to turn a snail into a business card holder. You create the exact look that works for you and everyone can still recognize the snail of the front of your case. These DIY business card holders also make great gifts for Slow Food Nation members, mail carriers or crafty insect-lover types who take their time to do things right!
Difficulty Level: Easy Sheamsy - at Kyle Design

Costly But Worth It
My family and I never had a problem with Aetna Open Access “High” Option. other then it’s monthly premium. Never had issuses with customer service. In fact on many accounts they came to bat for me when the hospital/Dr. office tried to charge me unnecessary charges when having my baby. The only reason not still going through them is their premium tends to increase by $300.00 a month every couple years.
Lillith’s Full Review of Aetna Life Insurance Company

Worth It?
Yes, Aetna is expensive. If I’m paying over two grand a year on my own health care, I wish they would stop being so hard on what they cover and how much. The postitive things I can say is that one visit to the hospital came to over $7,000 and I only paid $220. The customer service isn’t bad at all. They return calls when they say they’re going to. Is it worth the price? Thats up to you.

lemko’s Full Review of Erie Auto Insurance Group
Erie Insurance Group has perhaps the best car insurance anywhere. I have been with this company ever since I started driving back at age 17 under my Dad’s policy and have been with Erie under my own policy for the last thirteen years. The rates are far more reasonable and for superior coverage compared to its competitors.
Northeast Pennsylvania has relatively low car insurance rates compared to a lot of other regions. I was only paying $1,152 for full coverage on two Cadillacs - a 1989 Brougham and 1994 Deville.
When my employer wanted me to take a position in Philadelphia, I became very concerned. Philadelphia has perhaps the most exorbitant car insurance rates in the country. I’ve heard of people paying more in insurance installments than monthly payments on a car itself! Many factors contribute to Philadelphia’s awful rates. Nearly 50% of city drivers are either uninsured or underinsured. Many cars don’t carry a current registration or inspection. I can find many cars with inspection stickers from 1995 and have temporary tags for years. I don’t think it’s fair that responsible drivers should be penalized for the irresponsible ones, but I can’t think about “what if” and have to deal with “what is.”
When asking for quotes over the Internet for similar coverage Progressive quoted $2,669 for a year; Geico at $2,430; Electric Insurance Company at $3,330.00; and State Farm at a whopping $4,498! Prudential was so extravagant I won’t even embarrass them by posting their quote. I have a bulletproof driving record: no accidents and no tickets. Those competitor’s quotes sound more like somebody with a Ferrari Testarossa who drives like Dale Earnhardt and drinks like Dean Martin.
Erie’s quote was $1,772 - infinitely more reasonable than anybody else. I signed-up right on the spot! Sure, I could get a lower rate than that, even in Philadelphia, but only for the bare state minimum. Not only that, Erie’s representatives were very helpful and courteous and pointed out ways I could save money have the same coverage I had upstate.
When I made a claim several years ago when my parked Mercury Grand Marquis was damaged by a hit-and-run driver, Erie was responsive and promptly settled my claim. I had my car repaired within two weeks and was back on the road.
I don’t know how well they are with high-risk drivers - those with a few accidents, violations or DUIs. They may not even cover you. Another problem is that Erie outlets aren’t as numerous as its competitors and one may not be available near you. I didn’t think there were any in Philadelphia until I researched the Internet. They have a pretty good web page.
Anyway you look at it, Erie is a company that rewards good drivers and does not penalize you for where you live.
ShadowZone’s Full Review of Erie Auto Insurance Group
I have had Erie insurance since the day I started driving (long time ago) and I will never switch insurance. They really treat their insured’s as people and not a policy number, about a year ago I was hit by a guy with another insurance co, my insurance helped me with all information I needed to get through this, there were no life threatning injuries but bad enough. Erie called just to check and see how we were doing and if they could help us in any way, and to let them know if the gentleman that hit us did not have enough insurance and mine would. In the last 15 years of driving I (knock on wood) have had a clean driving record so I receive the prefered customer discounts from many well known insurance company’s such as State Farm, Geico, Progressive ect..
So I call for a price comparison because they say they can save me money and who now days wouldn’t like to save money. They can’t even come close to what I pay for full coverage they are hundreds over what I pay now, so when they give me the price I kinda chuckle and they ask what is so funny. I tell them what I pay and I have even had them ask for my insurance company’s phone number. With Erie insurance I have a no-fault accident, nothing will be held against me and they will not raise my rates, they offer towing for a very small amount a year, and they have different payment plans you don’t have to have a monthly payment. The people are friendly and will take time to answer any questions you may have, any problems and they will do their best to fix them. I can’t say enough, but at least call and compare what you pay with them, just tell them what you need and they will help. I have no plans to switch, I tell people all the time to at least hear what they have to say and go from their. They also have home insurance and much more, they have alot of discounts for more than 1 car or for house and car. Good luck!! Please give them a call and compare.
KaylaRaine’s Full Review of Erie Auto Insurance Group
I got my own insurance policy just two years ago when I was 21. I chose Erie because that is what my parents had. I can easily say that it was the best choice that I could have made.
I have always had great service with Erie and their prices are practically unbeatable. I recently moved from PA to VA and had no trouble transferring my insurance. All I had to do was call an Erie Agent in VA and she set everything up. She gave me a quote over the phone, told me that she would contact my former agent to get monies transferred, and send my papers in the mail.
Simple. About a week after I arrived at my new apartment in Falls Church, VA, I got my insurance papers, signed them, sent them back and got my new insurance card. Here’s the even better part…I moved from a medium sized town in PA to the D.C. Metro area and my car insurance actually went down almost $100!
Another great thing about Erie is that your rates will go down when you turn 24, not 25 like most companies. I have never been in an accident where I needed to contact Erie, but my dad was once and everything went smoothly. They took care of the problem quickly and efficiently.
Erie also offers a good price on Renter’s Insurance. I am only paying $114/year for $20,000 worth of coverage and when you get Renter’s Insurance through them, they give you a 5% discount on your car insurance. I’ve never come across a better deal with better service, so if you are in the market for new car insurance, you should definitely give Erie a try.

Carl D’s Full Review of Unitrin Direct Auto Insurance
“Unitrin Can’t Be Beat.”
I have had Unitrin since 2003. I haven’t had to deal with claims in awhile, which is always a positive thing! Anyway, when I did have to deal with Unitrin’s Claim process I didn’t have any problems. The Claims Department was pretty quick from what I can remember and I remain with Unitrin because they are affordably priced. I had been in a pretty bad accident in 2004 and I was racking up bills pretty quick. I was terrified that I was going to be financially ruined by the event. I wasn’t, Unitrin took care of everything, they were fast and friendly and I didn’t have to call them up a hundred times to deal with the issue. I am so satisfied that I plan to have Unitrin take care of my other insurance needs as well. Highly recommended, great services, great prices, they really can’t be matched by another company.

“I like Unitrin.”
They handled my claim quickly and fairly, and their quote was competitive for Los Angeles.
Sharon Hutchison’s Full Review of Unitrin Direct Auto Insurance
“Climbing Through the Passenger Door.”
The driver at fault, insured by Unitrin, was cited. Unitrin assigned an adjustor (Kim) that I had difficulty dealing with. She insisted I had to drive my vehicle because she did not want to pay rental fees. She did not care that the driver door would not open as a result of the collision and wanted me to continue climbing over the console from the passenger side. This also increased the back pain suffered in the accident. She had no problem with this issue or driving a car 200 miles to a medical appointment with a car out of alignment or having possible damage to the tire. My safety was a non-issue in her mind, only saving money mattered. She would not send me a copy of THEIR adjustors repair estimate, which was $250 higher than any other estimate I obtained at that time. I could not be reassigned to another adjustor. She demanded I deliver my car to the repair shop on a specific date, even though no appointment was scheduled and they could not start the work when she wanted. She attempted to give time quotas to the garage to obtain parts and well as perform the repair. She wanted to argue about everything. It is a very unpleasant experience. This company is very distasteful and we are just beginning. Perhaps they could read up on the definitation of professionalism and safety.

My mother had had Cigna for a few years, and like most families we just were happy with the doctors that were on the HMO plan, but really had not had to use any of the other features.
In the Fall of 95, I started to get very Ill. I was blacking out ever few feet I walked, I had lost a little over 30 lbs in 2 months and not because I was trying, I was constantly cold, and Then finally a Sharp SEARING pain in my lower back Led me to the hospital.
I was poke and prodded, Operated Twice on, Given 5 Units of Packed Red Blood Cells, and got to get to know every nurse on the ward in my 14 day stay. Due to the Fact that they thought I was going to die I was placed in a Private room, in the ICU ward of the Cancer Floor. Nope, I didnt have cancer I just had a weird thing where my body had stopped producing blood.
I had DR come in and Shake my hand and We never saw them again… until the bills started to arrive. And Boy did they start arriving!
at 19 I was responsible for my Bills (of course my parents were going to help out). On a college Budget, With a Huge Scar down my stomach.. and Orders not to do any work or overstress my self for a year limited my money. The bills were Piling up at the door, And I mean piling up. $8 Tylenol 3 pills, $45 Bedpans, $1000 a DAY room, not to mention the $45,000 surgery (and I had 2!). My bills were Rapidly going over 100,000 and then we saw them pass $200,000. I was shocked I was Just in Shock..
We Called CIGNA to see what our options were, How were we going to handle this!!!!..
A kind Lady answered the phone, answered our Questions, Answered our Prayers. Apparently (I dont know if they still have it) My mother had Paid a little extra into something called a Catastrophe clause , she didnt remember even doing it.
It gave you the ability to Claim one Catastrophe in like 5 years. Well We looked at each other, I asked mY mother if she thought it a good Idea, and she say YES!!!
We owed nothing except for a $50 fee and my After Care. Which totaled about $1000.
That was it. CIGNA With its Excellent Doctors (I had the Best in the State do my surgery, to remove a tumor from my uterus (cause by lack of blood to my reproductive system, my immune system was Doing really ODD things) and saved my Life, my uterus and Gave me the chance to have a healthy boy 2 years later), EXCELLENT Hospital, gave me the chance for Life with out a heavy Medical Bill.
Thank you for everything CIGNA.

Hey kids, it’s me dastr8poop! I bet you thought you’d seen the last of me, I sure thought you had, but it turns out that all it takes is one highly satisfactory customer experience to make me come screaming back to the consumer helpful e-ticket ride that is Epinions.
I’m here today to talk to you about insurance, pacifically CIGNA insurance.
Working as I do in the heath care field, I could tell you all kinds of boring information about CIGNA’s horrible track record and how they reimburse providers at such laughable rates that many doctors and hospitals are canceling their contracts with them. I could go on and on about my own experiences with them as a “recipient” of benefits, and how my account was almost sent to collections because they kept losing my claim. I could go on and on and bore you with all kinds of relevant details, but I choose not to.
Because boring details bore me.
Instead, I’m going to talk to you about one of the things that CIGNA offers as an “extra”. Many insurance companies tout their extras as a way to distract the consumer from the fact that they never pay their claims. Sometime this means bragging about how many doctors are in their “network” or selling you on the fact that the will be no paperwork and you’ll have nothing to worry about if you get sick. CIGNA uses the tried and true 24hr automated health information hotline.
I believe the intent of this service is to provide information about a variety of aliments, and by doing so relieve any fears that the concerned beneficiary might have. Sounds good. I know that there have been times in my life when I’ve been concerned about a rash, or an unusual discharge, or some other kind of rash when a 24hr automated health information hotline would have come in real handy.
The folly, and thus the comedy (because the is always comedy), inherit in this endeavor becomes clear when you take into account the fact that CIGNA has attempted to include every conceivable health concern in their pleasantly voiced-over library.
I would like for you to take a moment out of your busy day and experience for yourself the unnecessary extremes that CIGNA has taken to both waste money and provide their customers with vitally important health care information.
Call the CIGNA 24hr automated health information hotline at:
1-800-564-8982.
To access the health information library, press 2.
When prompted for the 4 digit extension enter: 5228.
Listen. Learn. And above all, be entertained.
Thank you and good night.

I have Cigna dental insurance and I like it. So far most procedures that I’ve had done have either been at no charge or for a low co-pay. I’ve never had dental insurance before but I seem to have hit the mark with Cigna.
The nice thing about Cigna st-80 is that you don’t have to deal with claims and such. They have a long list of procedures and what you have to pay for them when you go to a participating location, so there’s not a rude surprise when you’re done at the dentist.
Changing dentists couldn’t be easier. I just called them up and they were very friendly and helpful, the entire procedure took just a few minutes.
I really can’t say anything bad about Cigna at this time. The appear to be good solid insurance, at least for Dental insurance.

Yalum85’s Full Review of The Wawanesa Mutual Auto Insurance Company
I’m so happy I listened to my wife this time! She first heard about Wawanesa Insurance from a TV consumer advocate. Because the name was unknown to me, I hesitated. However, when their quote was about $400 less than what we were paying, we signed up!
Our Experience
We’ve had two claims in about 9 years. This is how Wawanesa handled them. First, while parked at a donut shop, the guy next to me pulled out, scraping his truck along the side of our station wagon. After I got him to apply his brakes, he first apologized for not having a mirror to see with, then he placed the blame on me for parking crooked, and he left! When I reported it to Wawanesa, the agent was very concerned for me, took the man’s license plate number, and gave me a location where I could get my car inspected. She told me they would fix my car and then go after the guy in the truck because it was considered a hit-and-run. Wow! How easy!
My second experience tops that, though! Late at night, I hit a tire that was rolling down the fast lane in a dark stretch of the freeway. Within a day or so, I received a call at work from an adjuster who said he’d come to my work to see the car. He called me later from the parking lot of my workplace. I went out, met him, showed him the damage, and he wrote me a check for $900+ on the spot! I went around for the rest of the day telling everyone how great my insurance company was (I showed them the check, too!). The best part was that my rates didn’t get hiked up, either!
To be covered, you must have a VERY good driving record! They won’t risk a lot, but if that keeps my rates down, I’m happy! They don’t have agents to give you quotes over the phone. You must call and request a form, then you mail it back with all the information. They send you quote after that. Believe me, it’s worth it! I’ve told several friends about Wawanesa, and every one of them that has qualified (some I was even surprised at!), has come back and THANKED me for telling them. Everyone has saved at least $100.
We’re still with Wawanesa, and plan to stay there.

In March I bought a car so I needed to find obtain insurance ASAP as the insurance I had from the dealer was basically the minimum required liability and property damage coverage required by California law. Also this was my first time purchasing car insurance so I knew my quotes would be high.
I went online to get some quotes and I also went to Wawanesa’s site to fill out the form so they could mail me some quotes. A few days later the quotes arrived in the mail and their quotes were the lowest I found.
Here are some of the quotes I received (Unless otherwise noted the coverage amounts are as followed: Bodily Injury $50,000/$100,000 Property Damage $50,000 Compressive $100 Ded. Collision $500 Ded. Uninsured Motorist $30,000/$60,000)
Wawanesa - $1,149 - 1 Year
AAA - $1424 – Year (Property Damage $25,000 Uninsured Motorist $15,000/$30,000)
GEICO - $993-60 – 6 Months
Progressive - $842 – 6 Months
Mercury - $877.90 – 6 Months
21st Century - $1186.00 – 6 Months
Allstate - $772.92 – 6 Months
AIG – $818 – 6 Months ($25,000 Property Damage $50,000/$100,000 Uninsured Motorist)
Obviously I chose Wawanesa because they had the lowest rates. The day I received the quotes I mailed them a check so they would cover me right away. They give you the option of paying your premium in full or by making payments of 20% down and 8 payments for the remaining amount plus a service charge. A few days later a customer service representative had called, however I missed the call and called them back the next morning. I called them back and they asked me couple of questions regarding people who have lived at my address or have used my address to receive their mail. After I answered their questions I was told everything was fine and I had coverage with them effective the day I requested for it to begin. I should add that Wawanesa doesn’t need pictures of your car.
I took some time to look at California Department of Insurance’s web site http://www.insurance.ca.gov/ and found Wawanesa ranks among the best in complaints.
Overall the process to obtain insurance was simple and I would recommend getting a quote for coverage.
ezmerchants’s Full Review of The Wawanesa Mutual Auto Insurance Company
Anybody who complains about this insurance company is probably a horrible driver who wants full coverage insurance for $10 per month and a service you would get at a $5000 a night hotel and he still wants to be able to whine. And, when he files a claim he wants the insurance company to always pay, no questions asked, like it’s a free-for-all or something.
Low prices, excellent and fast service, what else can you ask for? They have very few customer complaints compared to other insurance companies according to most credit rating organizations and have a history dating back to 1896 originating from Canada. Wawanesa was awarded an A+ (superior rating) for its financial strength from A.M. Best Co, the world’s oldest and most authoritative insurance rating and information source. I checked the Better Business Bureau’s web site and it was amazing how few their complaints were (13 complaints in the last 3 years compared to other companies’ hundreds of complaints) and they were all resolved! I have been with them for more than 5 years now and never had any problems, and every single person I have referred to them, never had problems either. Wait, I actually did get upset with them one time and told them to cancel my policy. Then I started shopping around for auto insurance, and when I saw premiums like $2000 from esurance and GEICO compared to Wawanesa’s $400 yearly premium I called back very nicely and got my policy back!

Adventure!Post Pt. 1
This past Saturday I went to Chicago Tardis! It was probably one of the most amazing experiences ever. The con was local, so it wasn't a hard decision to want to go. There's so much I'm afraid I'm going to forget, so I thought it best to type it all out here. I'm sure those of you who weren't able to attend would like to hear about it anyway. Here it goes...
Saturday Morning
I got up at about 7 a.m. to get ready. I was supposed to meet
mrsdrtennant</lj> and her brother (Alex) at the mall near the hotel before hand so we could grab coffee or something. We wanted to get there on time for registration, which started at 9 a.m. I left the house at about 8:15. It wasn't a bad drive, and we all were able to grab something to eat before we drove over to the hotel to register. We got to the hotel around 9:30 and jumped in line to get our packets and name tags. We also had to buy a ticket for Alex because he hadn't pre-registered. When we were done with registration, we asked one of the staff members where we would line up for Colin Baker photos that started at 10 a.m. We also asked about purchasing Lis Sladen autographs and photos. All of the staff were amazingly nice and had no problem answering the (many) questions we had. After we'd figured out all of the technical stuff, it was off to get Colin Baker photos!
We were probably somewhere in the middle of the line for photos. The premium members got to go first and then it was the one day or weekend attendees. We talked about a lot of random things. I can't even remember. I do know we had a long discussion about how
mrsdrtennant</lj> had made the Four scarf her brother was wearing, and how difficult it was.
mrsdrtennant</lj> and Alex as we patiently wait in line for Colin Baker photos...
mrsdrtennant</lj> (right) and I (left) in the same line...
The rest of the line behind us as we were about to go in.
When it was time to go into the room where Colin was doing photos, we had to show our cards to the door attendant (who was dressed as Jack Harkness and also incredibly nice) to check the event box off. He would be a person we'd come to know at the con pretty well, and always had an interesting story to tell us.
What can I really say about Colin. He was fantastic! I'd put my name badge away and (stupidly) forgot to introduce myself to him when I walked up there. He was lovely, though. I tried to be upbeat and really nice and everything like I try to be when I'm meeting new people and I really don't know what else to do. He was great and called me "honey" several times. It was only when I left the room that I realized that I'd never formally introduced myself. Oops. Oh well, I'd do it when we had the autograph session.
We both look like we're having fun...
Next we stood in line for the Lis Sladen pictures which were scheduled for 11 a.m. We were pretty far up in the line having come straight from Colin's photos. We talked with these two girls behind us who came to the con last year. I dressed up as "Boom Town" Rose, and the one girl said she'd done this last year but didn't feel like dressing up for this one. Her friend was dressed as Two and had also brought a Jaime costume to change into for the other half of the weekend.
It seemed like so much happened when we were in this line! First, Colin Baker walked out of the room to take a break, surprising all of us. We didn't even notice him until he yelled out, "Oh look, here's a line! Let me join it!" By this time, the line had gotten so big that it stretched all the way down the hall almost into the lobby. There were also several cosplayers that were in the line with us. There's a group of people from Canada who I recognized from
dw_cosplay</lj> as well as YouTube that were in line right behind us. Another couple came down the hallway dressed as the Doctor and Rose from "The Idiots Lantern". They were spot on with their costumes and their impersonations. It was amazing. At one point, this little girl went up to them, bouncing up and down because she thought they were the real Doctor and Rose. It was adorable!
This was the couple who had the "Idiot's Lantern" costumes. Aren't they amazing? You can also see how big the line was at this point for Lis Sladen pictures.
Me and the coplayers from Canada! There were about ten people snapping cameras at us all at once. I felt like a celebrity...or something. lol :D
At about 11:45 they told us that there had been a scheduling conflict and they had to move the Lis Sladen photos to 1:00. This was an open time slot for us, so we really weren't bothered. They told us to remember the order we were in and this was the order that we would line up in again at 1:00. They also numbered our cards for organizational purposes. We then wandered in to the Colin Baker autograph line because it was already filling up and it was nearly time for them to start letting us in anyway.
We got talking to some more people in this line. Again, it was about the knit scarf. A guy across from us in the line asked us where we'd gotten it and
mrsdrtennant</lj> explained that she'd knit it. At this point, I left
rt2788</lj> a message to let him know how everything was going as he couldn't make it out. :( As we got into the doorway, we were again treated to a story by the door attendant who was trying to help us remember random facts from the show. Then, we had our Colin autographs. I got my program to the con signed. Right before I stepped up to have my things signed the women helping run the photograph session were asking
mrsdrtennant</lj> and I if we wanted to buy a professionally done photograph. We both said we were poor college students. Colin over heard this and yelled: "Give these girls some money!" Then, to me, he said: "Oh, here, Mike (the guy in line in front of me) will give you some money." Suddenly, it was my turn. This is pretty much how are conversation went:
Me: (Stepping in front of him): Hi, I'm Taylor. (I steadied my name tag in front of me in case he'd misheard or something.)
Colin: You are Taylor, aren't you?
(I must have giggled or something at this point.
mrsdrtennant</lj> was just DYING behind me because she LOVES Colin Baker.)
Me: So, are you having fun.
Colin: I am now that you're here, Taylor.
(Again, more laughing from me and
mrsdrtennant</lj> . I also think there was more to our conversation here, but I can't remember.)
Me: Enjoy the rest of your time here.
Colin: You take care now. Especially with those wonderful mittens. (He was talking about my wrist warmers. lol)
He then proceeded to tell
mrsdrtennant</lj> about how she looked like his niece when she was 18. It was hilarious!
Saturday Afternoon
It was nearing 1:00, and we were getting ready for Lis Sladen pictures (finally!). We had to meet in a side room off the hallway that was being used to round people up or just line them up off to the side so there wasn't so many people just randomly standing around. The group of Canadian cosplayers were already there and one of them who was dressed like the Doctor was playing with a remote control K9 and all these little kids were trying to disable it with their Sonic Screwdrivers and Lipsticks. So cute. It wasn't long until the photos started up. It seemed to take forever, though, because of how excited I was. I'm short and was trying to stand on my tip toes over people to just see her for the first time. It was hilarious and sad.
When we got in there, we paid at the door for one photo with
mrsdrtennant</lj> and I together. I'm glad we did it this way. I really didn't know what to say to Lis Sladen, but somehow the whole thing turned out amazingly.
Lis: Oh so trendy. (I must have said thank you. I don't know. lol) I'm so cold, and now I have two girls to keep me warm.
(I originally didn't sit too close or do anything because I wasn't sure what she wanted to do. With some of the other people in the pictures, they weren't sitting close or anything. Lis GRABBED us to her, and told mrsdrtennant to share the chair with her. It was adorable!)
Lis: Come here girls. Snuggle, snuggle.
(After picture.)
Lis: That was the first time I've been warm the whole time here.
Me: (Reaching out to shake her hand.) It was wonderful to meet you.
Lis: Oh you, too. Cheers.
Lis is so much more petite in person than I thought. She was just adorable! I have no more words than that. :)
Lis Sladen! Yays! :D Doesn't she look fabulous? This is a picture of a picture, btw, so sorry about the quality. I'll have to scan in the actual copy later on...
It was now our first free period of the day. It was about 1:30, and we decided to hit the dealer's room. The Colin Baker panel was at 2:00, so we had to hurry a little. I was also starting to think about getting a Lis Sladen autograph as well. I'd probably need to hurry and get in line for that if I was going to do it. On the way to the dealer's room, we got distracted and listened to a few minutes of the Big Finish panel complete with Nicholas Briggs. I spent maybe 10 minutes in the dealer's room, bought a button, and told my companions that I'd meet them outside the ballroom when I was done with autographs.
There's Nicholas Briggs with the microphone! We randomly stumbled upon this panel while going toward the dealer room.
I was farther back in the line this time for autographs. I did meet this wonderful girl, Carly, who drove up from New Orleans because they don't really have cons like Tardis down there. She was incredibly nice, and it was interesting to just talk about random stuff with someone new. I didn't get into the room with Lis until about 2:45. It was worth the wait, though. Again, our friend at the door had an interesting story to tell us. Apparently, someone ran over to Target (which was right next to the hotel) to get Lis a smoothie. I just thought that was random and funny. When I stepped up to get my autograph, the guy in front of me asked her how she enjoyed her smoothie. She said it gave her a brain freeze (she used another term that was a Britishism) and was more slushy than she thought. It might not have been the best idea when she was cold she said. She was involving several people around in the conversation, which made it seem way more casual, and I really liked that. When I got up there, I wanted to say something better than I had last time...
Me: Hi, I'm Taylor. (Again, I steadied my name tag.)
Lis: Taylor? (I shook my head.) Everyone has such lovely names here.
Me: I really love your coat. (She had on this black and white checkered coat that was just amazingly cute. I loved it.)
Lis: (She looked surprised.) This? Oh I know, it's cold in here. (Leans over to staff member next to her.) Isn't it cold? (He said yes.) Is it always this cold? Because I know you call it the Windy City...
Me: Yeah. We have really cold winters and really hot summers.
Lis: Well, I remember being here a few years ago in the summer with my husband, and it was very hot. (She was still also talking to the guy sitting next to her.) I just hope it doesn't snow for my flight out.
Me: I'm sure it won't. It's still a little early. (I was WRONG! I lied to Lis Sladen. Ooops...)
(Again, there was some more in here somewhere, but I can't remember it.)
Me: I just wanted to say that I love all your work in Doctor Who, and I watch the Sarah Jane Adventures all the time. (I stopped myself because I thought I sounded a little crazy...)
Lis: (At this point she started to sign my program and a picture I'd gotten of her with K-9.) How old are you if I may ask, Taylor?
Me: 20.
Lis: Twenty? Now, see, that just amazes me. Isn't it amazing? (Again to the guy next to her.) It surprises me to see all the fans of different ages now. All the young people!
Me: And I know my dad really enjoyed you in the old series.
Lis: Now, see that's what I mean.
(At some point I said goodbye to her and such.)
My companions were waiting outside for me. It was about 3:10 at that point, so we decided to get some lunch at the mall...

This year has been full of good memories for me and here are some important points this year that I would like to share with you guys:
- Hired as an SEO Specialist for a Promotional Items Company.
- Studied PHP at Bluepoint Institute of Higher Technology.
- Became a founding member of Philippine Web Designers Organization.
- Invited at QTV to talk about kids surfing celebrity fansites.
- My first time to travel abroad and visit Hong Kong.
- SM Chairman Henry Sy and I shook hands.
- Bought my first MacBook at half the price.
- Organized my first SEO contest.

Ever since I started working full time, my site’s traffic dropped significantly. I can no longer find the time to really sit down and think on what to write about. As you can see, several of my blog posts are still incomplete. I need to make all the necessary fixes first before I can start blogging again.
I hope next year will be a better year than 2008. I’m planning to explore more on things I haven’t done before and try to make most of my time getting the experience on everything I’ve always wanted to do. Hmm… I might do some hiking, scuba diving, learning a foreign language or two and traveling new places would be great. The more the better.
Also, I will try not to worry so much about making money and try to spend more time with God. Thank God for 2008 and Happy New Year 2009 to Everybody!

First of all, I never actually talked to a Korean before (not including a potential web design client whom I had a meeting with from way back). This is entirely based on the Korean movies I’ve seen so far. You might say “I’m watching too much TV”, but most Korean films have the theme destiny added in their story lines.
Popular Korean movies like My Sassy Girl, The Classic and II Marie (remade in the US as The Lake House) end with couples realizing that destiny has brought them together. It’s like after all the suffering, uncertainties in life and the long, endless twists and turns of the story, you will see that everything is interconnected and events in life (no matter how insignificant it could be) has some contribution to what a person will have in the end.
I also read a forum post that agrees with my assumption about Koreans believing in destiny. Read more here and see that their strong belief on what’s ‘meant to be’ is an integral part of their society.
n
I hope I can get some Koreans to share their thoughts on the topic, if they agree with what I noticed about them :) Thanks for reading.

I am here at Kowloon (pronounced “cow” + “loon”, like toon), Hong Kong for a 3 day business trip. This blog post will give some details and tips how to get here. More soon.
You will miss this if you don’t go to Hong Kong!
Here’s what you need if you want to Travel to Hong Kong from Manila:
- Airline Ticket (Cebu Pacific Round Trip Ticket from Manila to HK and back is about PhP 9800.00 and I want to buy pasalubong, dont take the Go-Lite fare)
- Hotel reservation (The Kowloon Hotel costs about US$ 270 for 2 nights)
- Money to pay taxi fare (I paid about PhP 120.00 from Makati to NAIA Terminal 3)
- Money for Travel Fee (PhP 1,620.00)
- Money converted to Hong Kong Dollars (HK$ 1.00 is PhP 7.20 at our local forex)
- Philippine Passport (must be valid at least 6 months before expiry date)
- Completely fill up the Philippine Immigration Form (provided by Cebu Pacific when you check in)
- International Roaming set on your mobile phone. Here is from Globe Telecoms.
When you arrive at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) , you would probably need to know these:
- You need to fill up the Hong Kong Immigration Form (it has an Arrival form and Departure Form)
- From the plane you will take a train to the terminal (this is free)
- Give the Arrival form to the immigration officer and you keep the departure form.
- You will see there is an HSBC ATM inside the terminal, convenient if you have an ATM that has the symbols posted on the machine (Plus, Mastercard, Cirrus, Visa etc).
- In the terminal you will see familiar stores like Starbucks, 7-11, Watsons etc.
- If you have no roaming phone, buy a local SIM card, worth HK$60 from China Mobile Limited.
- Money to pay Airport Express MTR from the terminal to the city (I paid HK$90 from HKIA to Kowloon).
- Trains here travel so fast it’ll hurt your ears just like what you feel while on a plane.
- Money to pay from Kowloon terminal to your destination (I took a taxi and paid HK$34 from terminal to The Kowloon Hotel)
- Alternatively, you can take the CityFlyer bus if you want to take the longer route to the city.
Here’s how to go to the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort:
- Take the nearest MTR and connect your train route until you reach Sunny Bay station. From there you will see a train that look like this, which takes you to Disneyland. Here are some pictures when you arrive.
- From Hong Kong station under the Two International Finance Centre Building costs $23.5 and takes about 20mins to the Sunny Bay station.
- Distance from Sunny Bay station to Disneyland is 3.5 kilometers and takes 3.5 minutes to travel (that’s 1 kilometer per minute!).
Here are some tips when you are now ready to leave Hong Kong and return to your own country. :
- If you prefer to take pictures while going to the airport, find (or go ask people) the A21 Cityflyer bus stop. This bus takes your directly to the airport in a hour. (from Kowloon to Airport is HK$33.00)
- If you are in a hurry, take the MTR nearest you and follow connecting routes until you reach the airport. Check out this MTR route map i took for reference. Travel takes an average of 30mins from Kowloon)
- There is no terminal fee of travel fee to be collected.
- Checking in takes about 1.5 hours in my case. So be sure to arrive at least 2 hours before the flight.
- Don’t bring liquids if possible. If you need to bring one, make sure you have it tightly packed following their standard package rules.
- Laptops are checked separately, not sure if this means they’ll check for pirated software :-P
- There are hundreds of stores inside the terminal. If you forgot to buy pasalubong, you can buy from the terminal instead.
Some tourist spots in Hong Kong I missed because I only stayed there for 3 days and only had 2 days to go around :(
- Avenue of the Stars
- Ngong Ping 360 (Cable Car in Lantau Island)
- Hong Kong Tramways
- Mong Kok (recommeded by friends for buying cheap goods)
- lots more later!

What Kids should know about Fan Sites

I just had an interview with an 11 year old kid on how she uses the Internet to learn more about her favorite celebrities. Turns out, here’s what I found that are most common on kids her age.
- They spend 2 to 6 hours a day browsing the net after doing their homework.
- Visit online gaming sites like Joytube.com, Barbie.com and Bratz.com
- Most common social networks they visit are Friendster and Multiply.
- YouTube is very popular and they mostly visit videos of their celebrities.
- Downloading pictures of their favorite celebrities and use them as wallpapers.
Fan sites are good alternative source of information other than the official sites of their favorite celebrities. They are mostly found on social sites like Friendster, Multiply and on forum sites as well. On fan sites you can find tons of pictures of celebrities and latest news and gossip. People share their thoughts towards celebrities they love and those they love to hate.
Some popular celebrities have their own blog or official websites. If there is no official site, TV stations provide some basic information of their celebrities like GMA’s detailed Stars Database ( igma.tv/stars ) and ABS-CBN’s celebrity profiles ( http://beta.abs-cbn.com/tabid/85/Default.aspx ).
With the popularity of fan sites, there are people who abuse a fanatic’s need to connect with their admired celebrities. There are fan sites specifically made for people and make them think they are really talking to their favorite celebrities and lure them to meet on a secret place and become their victim.
Here are tips that can help your kids stay away from sociopaths like child sexual predators posing as kids.
- Use parental control software to prevent your kids from accidentally visiting unwanted sites. You can’t block all illegal sites out there, but you will at least have some protection.
- Once in a while, sit beside your kid and lead them to fun and educational sites where they can learn something new everyday.
- If you allow them to open an account on social networking sites (like Friendster or MySpace), make sure they don’t disclose their full name, or email or details of your family.
- Don’t let them add friends you or they don’t personally know. Better to keep your friends network to a minimum, this way you won’t end up having someone you don’t want on the list.
- Stay away from fake celebrity profiles. Sometimes it’s hard to see which profile is for real or not, its better to never communicate with them at all.
- Don’t forget to make your PC as secure as possible from viruses and hackers by installing the latest Anti Virus, Anti Spyware and Internet Firewall software.

I was in SM Mall of Asia to buy a tripod for my camera when SM started their Grand Festival of Lights.
While I was roaming around the mall I saw Henry Sy, Sr., owner of SM (and all other companies under SM Prime Holdings) and the richest Man in the country (with net worth of 3.1 billion US dollars) inside Starbucks with three other people (one I think was his daughter Teresita Sy-Coson) at around 7:15pm.
Then without hesitation I went inside Starbucks and walked straight to Henry Sy , pat his left shoulder and said: “Congratulations, Sir…50 Years…uhrmmm” and then Henry Sy shook my hand. I was utterly speechless after that and then I left because I have no idea what to do next. I even forgot to greet him Merry Christmas or gave him my name or business card and even I forgot to take a picture with him. Parang star struck sa starbucks :-p
I am not sure if I’ll ever meet him (as close as I got to him) or shake hands with Henry Sy again. He is already 84 years old and It might be a once in a lifetime experience for me. It’ll be unlikely that he will find this blog post, but if he does, I would really love to talk to him again and learn from him on how he became a successful businessman after 50 years of hardwork, perseverance and determination.

A multitude of opportunistic scams are targeting homeowners trying to avoid foreclosure in the current housing downturn. Prosecutors in the state of California unsealed twin cases against 19 people who are said to have skimmed nearly $13 million in equity from 115 homeowners coast to coast under the guise of a mortgage rescue.
Federal investigators say they expect the number of people ensnared in fraudulent foreclosure schemes to grow given such financial straits. The Mortgage Bankers Association said a record 2% of the nation’s 46 million mortgage loans were in the foreclosure process at the end of the fourth quarter. The number of defaults on first mortgages is forecast to rise to 1.9 million this year from 1.4 million in 2007, according to a report by Economy.com using FDIC and other data.

Why A “Diss” Hurts More Than Your Co-worker

Although few of us continue to frequent our former office environs, most, if not all of us still have a circle of vendors and customer with which we are in constant contact. It’s human nature, at least with those whom I have observed, including myself, for us to find fault with others.
We are all subject to numerous factors that influence the accuracy with which we make personality judgments of ourselves and others. Factors to consider are the relationship between normal personality and any personality disorders, connections between personality and language use, and the psychological assessment of social situations in which we find ourselves.
Introspection might just reveal a feeling of enjoyment and triumphant, maybe even a certain smugness at “dissing” someone. We see this happening in the workplaces, associations, family and nearly all places of human interaction.
Psychologists call this “projection”;i.e., transferring onto other people the things you don’t like about yourself. If you seek perfection in your life, you’re not likely to truly find it. In fact, the irony is that you will be obsessed with the opposite condition — imperfection.
As a result, you will begin to notice it everywhere, in every situation, in every person. You will hate it and you will hate yourself.
Think about it!
Working Towards Wealth
Just what is wealthy? The dictionary definition of “wealthy” is having an abundant supply of money or possessions of value; “an affluent banker”; “a speculator flush with cash”; “not merely rich but loaded”; “moneyed aristocrats”; “wealthy corporations”. However, in my mind, being wealthy is to be in control of one’s time on this earth. All of us [...]

All of us have only a certain number of days that we can truly enjoy ourselves; in good health, with wonderful family and interesting friends, surrounded by an appealing environment.
In order to determine just how we spend our time, we must not just have adequate disposable income, but time off from the drudgery of earning that income to enjoy ourselves.
So, this article is more than merely how to retire wealthy, but how to be wealthy.
Aside from those lucky individuals that are born into wealth, the majority of us have to find a way to earn our livelihood. To acquire wealth we need to get ourselves in a situation or situations consisting of three attributes; measurement, leverage, and residuals.
First, the position we choose to acquire must be one in which our performance can be easily measured. Otherwise, there is no way to get paid more by doing more.
Second, we must have to have leverage, in the sense that the decisions we make have a significant effect on the economic worth of our efforts.
And finally, our efforts must generate more than a mere salary. What we do to create wealth is in direct correlation to our ability to parlay our efforts into residual income (Note 1).
One of the best examples of an individual achieving the three attributes of creating wealth is Microsoft’s Bill Gates. Some argue that since Gate’s family was wealthy (his father was a prominent lawyer, his mother served on the board of directors for First Interstate BancSystem) that his success was predestined. However, Gate’s is a truly “self-made-man”.
He wrote his first computer program on an ASR-33 teletype terminal, time-shared to a General Electric (GE) mainframe. An implementation of the childhood game tic-tac-toe, it allowed users to play games against the computer. Gates was fascinated by the machine and how it would always execute software code perfectly.
From that humble start, Gates exhibited the first attribute of generating wealth, engaging in efforts in which his performance could be (easily) measured. Then, as his software development efforts were having big effects on the economic worth of his efforts (attribute #2), Gate’s first blockbuster effort, Altair BASIC, lead to his initial strong-hold on the PC software marketplace.
The residuals became to flow, which ultimately led to Gate’s enormous wealth.
We all strive to amass wealth. To succeed, at all times, our efforts must focus on
1. measurement,
2. leverage,
3. residuals.
Note 1. Residual Income (also called Passive Income) is income earned on an ongoing basis for effort done once in the past.

Parents always say they never regret having their kids. It kind of goes with the territory. Love conquers all (eventually). But whilst you’re living through it all, it seems like you’re struggling from one crisis to the next. Like when they first learn to drive. Despite your better judgement, you let them drive the family car. Later you buy them something to run around in. But, when they’re starting off, you add them to your own auto insurance policy (and say prayers).
Jack and Joan had two teenaged children who pestered them to drive the family car on special occasions. When that use grew to be expected, one car wasn’t enough so the first cheap, fixer-upper that never got fixed joined the family car on the driveway. They talked over the problem with their agent. “He was kinda laid back about it all,” Joan said with a smile. “He warned us that kids always have a run of accidents. Ours weren’t exception.” Jack leaned over to interrupt. “It was a bad two or three years. Everytime they went out, we never knew whether they would come back in one piece.” Margaret was nodding in agreement. “We found ourselves turning to Christ more often. We had the Pastor bless the cars when the kids weren’t around and held prayer sessions on a regular basis. There were five small fender benders. Nothing too serious, and never a scratch on the kids.” “Praise the Lord!” Margaret’s smile of relief said it all. “And every time the car insurance came round for renewal we were expecting a hike. But the company held the line.” “It was all down to the agent who showed us how to get the discounts to keep everything smooth until they could get policies of their own at good premium rates.”
Later, there were all the worries about dropping out of college, surprise pregnancies and marriages. But that’s another story. This one says find a good auto insurance agent who can help you through the teenage years. Other than that, trust in the God to see you through.
Explaining Auto Insurance Deductibles
Insurance is a contract between the insurance company and you. Like all contracts, it’s give and take. That’s what makes a good bargain. In this case, we’re talking about an auto insurance policy. So, in return for the premium, you’re asking the insurance company to pay whatever costs arise from the traffic accidents you get [...]
Insurance is a contract between the insurance company and you. Like all contracts, it’s give and take. That’s what makes a good bargain. In this case, we’re talking about an auto insurance policy. So, in return for the premium, you’re asking the insurance company to pay whatever costs arise from the traffic accidents you get into. It looks like a bet. The insurer works out what the odds are given the car you drive and your track record - it’s called risk assessment - and sets the premium accordingly. But you can also risk. Suppose you think that, as a good driver, you’re never going to get in an accident or, if you do, it’s never going to be more than a fender bender with nominal damage on both sides.
In a perfect world of free choice, you could decide not to carry insurance at all. You’ll always have enough cash in hand to pay out for the minor dinks and dents you cause. Unfortunately, our world is not perfect. All but three states in the union require you to carry car insurance. If you drive any vehicle on the road without a valid policy in place, you commit a crime. Why is that? Well, it usually takes two to have a traffic accident. You may be the most careful driver in the world, but the idiot who rear-ends you while you’re parked may lack the same skills. It’s also possible that you may overestimate your skills and underestimate the amount of money you may have to pay if there is an accident. Suppose, for example, you hit an imported luxury car and injure the rich lawyer driving, the costs of repairing the car and compensating the lawyer for pain and suffering may be just short of astronomical.
So deductibles are a happy compromise. Most insurance companies allow you to pay the first part of any claim you make. The amounts are usually stepped as $100, $250, $500 or $1,000. So if you cause damage valued at $3,400, the insurer will pay the balance after you have paid your contribution. Yes, payment of the deductible is a precondition of the insurer paying out. So, when you’re getting your online quotes, always remember to opt for the amount of deductible you can afford. That way, your car insurance policy will come with a discount. The higher the deductible, the bigger the discount!

You need to answer your clients’ emails but you also have to work without interruptions. You can do both using your email’s auto responder.
One of the most common phrases we hear from anyone who emails us is, “Wow, I didn’t expect you to reply so quickly!” It puzzles me. Why wouldn’t I reply? My clients are my financial lifeblood. Why would I ignore them if they have a question or a need?

Problems not features
As a web designer, your clients give you suggestions about how their site should look. They may ask you to implement cool features they see on other sites. Instead of that, you should discover what they actually want and then consider adding that feature or using a different solution.
Clients have proposals. They come in all sizes and shapes, from formal RFPs to an idea hastily sketched on a back of a napkin. But there is one thing they all have in common: Requirements.

Software for start-ups
Software is at the very heart of any modern startup. The business ideas, new utilities for society and the next big thing all boil down to code. If the code is good, the startup has a chance. If the code is bad, no matter how brilliant the business people are the startup is not going to get far.

Success with guaranteed sign-ups
We all hate to admit this, but at some point, we've all joined an online MLM programs – and we all struggled to build a downline. And the question many of us asked is: “How do the big dogs do it”?
Basically, a “guaranteed sign up” campaign works something like this: a company starts by gathering leads that have expressed interest in joining an online opportunity and do not mind being contacted by a business sponsor. These companies then enter the leads into your program (provided that it is free to join), creating your downline on auto-pilot. And it's that easy.
The key to being successful with MLM programs success lies in how you relate to your new downline. If you come to them with the intention of tricking them into a paid upgrade, you are going to lose them fast.
Instead, you should get them acquainted with the benefits of your MLM program. Be friendly; get personal. Give away some useful stuff to them. This process is “relationship building.”
Relationship building is a very crucial part to your MLM success. Let them know how they can possibly benefit from your program and what it's potential is. It will help you a lot.
You should get as many leads as you can. Keep the following in mind: MLM Marketing is a numbers game!
Many Guaranteed Sign Ups companies come and go fast because they want to earn a quick buck. When you look for a company to provide sign ups for your MLM downline building campaign, there are a few important things to check out:
1) How long have they been around?
2) Do they have any certification?
3) Does the website look professional? Anyone can create a website, but not everyone can create a corporate-looking, professional website. While a professional-looking website does not prove their credibility, it at least shows the level of commitment to a website.

There is a time before fame. I am twenty three. My father is rich and powerful. I never see him. Sometimes we talk on the telephone – brief conversations in which nothing is said – but mostly, communication is facilitated through the lawyer, whom I have never met and whose name is unknown to me. He’s a Brahmin. He only meets with others of his own caste, men like my father.
Something extraordinary happens and my body forgets how to breathe. A small but comfortable hotel near Hampstead becomes my home. Other guests come and go: a young man whose legs don’t work; another who screams in the night; a girl who picks flowers in the garden then burns them alive in the open fire in the communal lounge. Soon it will be check out time for me also. With the help of Julius Wayne Gold, the proprietor, I have relearned the art of breathing. I have been hibernating and am now slowly waking.
I have a collection of obscure jazz records. Some are relics passed down to me by my mother; a few are artefacts from the time before something
extraordinary happens; many I have purchased by mail order. Every one is a dirty fuck in the dark. I call it vacuum cleaner music: jazz on a double bass with a violin bow stuck up its arse. It enfolds you, pulls you in, ultimately consuming you. It’s comedy music, murder music, a crazy, mental, musical search for a lost identity.
The lawyer’s business card visits. Its bearer, it tells me, is Peter Clarke, Personal Assistant. I wonder if Peter Clarke has ever met the lawyer and conclude that he must have.
I dislike him instinctively. He calls me “Jon” in an irritatingly over familiar way and insists, even before I have made any attempt to address him in any other way, that I call him “Peter”. I’m about to file him in a fake leather organiser labelled LOSERS, which I keep in the back of my mind for just such a purpose, when some vulnerability behind his caffeinated eye-flicker causes me to ease back on the contempt pedal: something to do with that very English and often paradoxical affection for animals, especially dogs and horses.
My father talks about the dogs, in the early hours. He hates them; all his life he’s suffered from a pathological terror that one day he might become one. That fear may be the secret of my father’s success. I imagine him telling his friends, as they relax on one of his private beaches or gaze out from his New York penthouse window, immune to the unmentionable fetors of the ocean or the city’s unpublished skin, that he can still hear the dogs thinking.
I can hear Peter Clarke thinking. I decide to give him a canine sobriquet, a pet name, if you like: Duke.
An apartment has been rented for me in St Johns Wood, he tells me, overlooking Lords cricket ground. I have a picaresque fantasy about living in east London, Poplar, perhaps, or Stepney, Bethnal Green or Mile End, with a local pub frequented by gangsters and beached merchant seamen, where they have lock-ins until the early hours. I tell Duke St Johns Wood is perfect. Sarcasm is like the air I breathe.
There are papers for me to sign. A new bank account has been organised for me, with the Very Special Bank. When I bank with the Very Special Bank, no matter what stage of my life or career I’m at, I benefit from a wealth management service that includes banking and investment planning expertise delivered in a personal way with an extensive array of flexible products and services specially designed for clients such as myself.
Duke hands me my Very Special cheque book, my passport to the new universe, and my Very Special cheque guarantee card, and my Very Special Classic credit card, which, with its understated design, is perfect for those transactions where discretion is of the essence.
Discretion is like the water I drink. Look in my eyes, kid, tell me what you see: a nigger double bass player with a vacuum cleaner smile and a gris-gris sack full of honey for the Jazz Bear at twilight? Get real. Clink glasses with old Judas, old son, good old buddy. Jude with his big assed suit. I can see him now: God on his shoulder directing operations and giggling pissed on Jack Daniels and Coke, sweat and saliva dribbling from his nose and chin, spit foaming up like whipped snot around his criminal grin, Judas Iscariot in the Can-Can chair showing the jitter-bug boys a trick or three.
Because God made everybody, right?
Duke will be around any time I need him, just to help me out should I require assistance readjusting. I dismiss him and settle down to some obscure jazz and a few glasses of Irish. I wonder how much Duke knows; I wonder if he’s my own private Judas, stealthily positioned by the lawyer. The biggest mark of a Brahmin is his skill at chess.
That nigger bass player clinks the last of the ice into a glass just after midnight and I call St Peter at the cab station. Soon my Very Special taxi man is floating small stones towards my window. Manipulation is an innocent nine tenths of the fatal, beautiful flaw.

Top of the Funny Farm steps, an amazing space, the doorman is a fixture (widely known as Cleopatra), always has the same smile, always the same stance: ill-fitting Crombie and a bad-luck smile, a rain-drop for every tear, an epic queen’s lament. Fear the Bandana Man. He’s a swallow hovering over the dead city, sweetly, darkly and always out of context. The taxi man thinks he may be a bat. Cleo harbours no hesitation – she is, after all, the king of the steps – just pencils him out like the artist she is, in one simple movement so succinct, a hand-job concerto, a jazz-fuck, a spandex-slap, a wank through a Durex darkly.
Inside it’s all low lights and Camden rock stars: Lemmy and the corner guys from the Regents Park high-rises at a corner table eating their own words; the Highlander nerds advertising big spectacles to the right, arguing nasty over a couple of misdirected whiskies; a bunch of 2-tone queers and toothless Jerry slobbering over a handful of Golders Green doxies and whosoever is cool tonight been gigging local and every waiter and bartender and hooker in the know taking up the slack whilst the union delicately defines the horizon.
I pay my imaginary friend and tell him to park in a side street in view of Chalk Farm station just before dawn. A turtle abuses a violin and, dying, a mouthless man with a trumpet and nobody knows why but someone mentioned to one of the corner boys that his father’s a Hollywood bigshot, falls over as everything else falls, into place or space or doesn’t – the latest is the best, always, and nobody’s as late as me, but the guy’s so cool, even if he is over a hundred years old.
So, as his son, I welcome you here this morning, this beautiful, alien, drunken morning, each and every one of you and those that have gone before. And we’ll be brothers and sisters and, throughout the course of our time together we’ll forget our differences and, perhaps, finally, be able to excommunicate.
Oh, but I’m welcome here: anyone and no-one who knows I’m here and who I am – my Associates (yes, Billy’s here too), as I may describe them, are legion, and it is better by far to be known by the many as by the one and also loved, seeing as one, drinking and copping-off as one…. Who knows the true value of a quality kiss-off in 1983?
I’m at the bottom of the Funny Farm steps. The restaurant screams and stinks above me. Endless corridors stretch all the way to nowhere and back, reeking of expensive and wonderfully toxic piss and, faced by a boarded entrance that declares in obvious, un-white horror, THIS DOOR IS ALARMED, I throw up.
That makes two of us.
Then it’s Bridget from Agar Grove, hanging on my collar. I kiss her, softly at first, then, as it senses her heat, my tongue is egged on to part her teeth, to savour, with extreme prejudice and resultant joy, her bog-Irish- Hertfordshire-nigger cross palate, and, fearful still but emboldened by her natural vanity and sexually curious nature, she opens.
“You stink of vomit.”
“Well, I have recently voided my gut.”
“Toot?”
Oh sure, oh yes, absolutely, slipping her purse into my coat and sipping the top off my Irish as I manoeuvre myself gracefully and with extreme cool out from behind our table, winking at the new, ever-so-young waitress, whom I’ve never before seen but who’s been making it hugely plain since I got here that she knows damn well who I am, and across the floor and down those creepy steps again to that terrified gateway.

Internet based business opportunity
Are you interested in a Home Business? What skills and interests do you have, to help you start working from home? How can you build a business on these skills?
The possibilities are endless. You can use the Internet to get ideas. Look out for Business Opportunities. Or look at local sources of business. You can get ideas from books, too.
Remember to check with local government to see if you need a business license, if there are zoning issues or if there are special laws or regulations governing the type of business you want to start.
You should be realistic, though, about how much money you will make. Building up your own business and finding customers or clients takes time. You won't get rich overnight; you may not get rich at all.
But you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that you're doing something you love and getting paid for it. You'll have lots more flexibility to work when you want and carve out time for your family.
Working for yourself is still work. It isn't easy, but it can be rewarding and a lot of fun.

Network marketing – home based Opportunity
If you've ever heard of Network Marketing, you've probably heard it said that it is essentially a people's business.
One of the unique characteristics of the network marketing type of business is that every individual distributor is in business for themselves but never by themselves. They will always be part of a larger organization and the compensation models are designed in such a way that every person can count on some form of support from their up-line.
It is no secret that fortunes can be made in this type of business and many have done just that. Every individual distributor does have the same chances. Success or failure is not dictated by politics, race, age, background or gender, but always by results. In that respect it is probably also the fairest business model in the world.
What is so unique about network marketing? One of the great things about network marketing is that education is built into the training systems of all good companies.
Network marketing is all about building people. It is probably your best bet if you want to learn about what it takes to be successful in life and you don't need rich parents or some kind of scholarship to enroll.

MA Attorney General to Appeal US Dist. Court Ruling
How comforting to know I was wrong!
Can’t begin to express how giddily happy I am to see my hard-earned state tax dollars being spent to appeal a US District Court decision that barely makes an iota of a dent in the inane, outdated laws we have about when and how I can buy wine.

South Carolina governor Mark Sanford recently referenced these thoughts in a CATO article (can’t find it online) and it struck me as particularly poignant given the trillions of dollars we are sucking out of our childrens’ pockets these days.
A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years.Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage.

WHEREAS, INVENTIONS include only those conceived or made by the EMPLOYEE solely or jointly with others during or outside working hours within the term of the EMPLOYEE’S employment by the EMPLOYER…
1. What the fuck? This company must have a HUGE wheelbarrow they use to carry their cojones around in. It is entirely unreasonable to suggest every conceivable, commercializable thought that runs throgh your brain belongs to the employer. In the end, I’m certain this is not enforceable - but who the hell wants to pay to litigate it?
2. Notice that the ‘jointly’ language doesn’t say anything about ‘co-workers’ - it’s anybody. If this employee is kickin’ around ideas about widgets with his sister-in-law over Sunday dinner? Blammo. Chatting with random buds before the movie starts? Blammo. Walks into a meeting of entrpreneurs and suggests great improvements to some random dude’s product? Blammo. In-fucking-sane.
3. Shame on any employee for signing something like this. Ya gotta read these things, folks. DO NOT agree to moronic language like this!

Good Riddance.

Goodbye to one of my heroes of humour
RIP Geoffrey Smith
The gardening broadcaster and writer Geoffrey Smith passed away recently. Readers of my Radio Magazine column and my other blog Freelance Comedy Writer may know that I was a great fan of Mr Smith's use of humour: dry wit delivered with perfect timing in a broad, Yorkshire accent.
He proved that there are few subjects which cannot be rendered more interesting by an injection of humour from a speaker. Back in 1987, I heard a BBC Radio 4 documentary which featured a public speaker whose subject was flower arranging. They played a clip where he was talking to a large audience about aesthetics and how even a simple dish like baked beans on toast could be made to look inviting if it was presented in a certain way with perhaps a sprig of parsley on top instead of just tipping the beans out of the saucepan onto the plate 'Like this...' (He then made a disgusting, squelching sound). The crowd roared with laughter and the narrator stated that this speaker was booked up solidly two years in advance.
I sometimes wonder if this documentary planted the seed, so to speak, of an ambition to speak to clubs and societies nearly a decade later, albeit about rather different subject matter.
Public Speaking Tip #293: Think how you can add appropriate, naturally-introduced humour to the subject of your presentation, whether in the form of a short anecdote, observation or quotation, just as the late Geoffrey Smith did. It's a garnish that can only make you more effective and memorable as a public speaker.
Adding 'family value' to your speech
Mudeford Wood Age Concern, Christchurch
It's funny how the bookings fall sometimes - you can find yourself speaking to a number of organisations in the same area within a very short space of time. On 11 March, I found myself back at Mudeford (and indeed at the Mudeford Wood Community Centre) yet again, this time for the Pop In Centre run by Age Concern.
This was a repeat booking for this group (I spoke to them for the first time in November 2005) and my topic for the 40-or-so members and helpers this time was The Power of Humour in Everyday Life.
This is very much a 'pick 'n' mix' talk where content is concerned. There are certain 'banker' anecdotes which go in every time but other items vary. For this particular audience, I decided to include a piece of original verse from my late mother's talks, 'Radio Remembered', which I thought they would appreciate. It drew a gratifying round of applause so I was right!
Public Speaking Tip #299: If you are delivering personal material, don't forget to draw upon your own family as a resource. They may have some great, original stories, etc, that will be perfect for your presentation and deserve a wider audience.
I spoke for around 55 minutes and it went well, including another airing for the new 'dangers of puns' anecdote I have 'running in' recently!
After the talk, I spent some time chatting to John and Ilse Cole who have done such a great job organising this much-needed club for many years. Then it was time to start thinking about my fourth booking that week - an engagement at a writers' circle in Surrey where I had never spoken before...
Mudeford Good!
Brendoncare Castle Club, Mudeford Wood
On 23 February, I was booked to deliver The Power of Humour in Everyday Life to another club run by Brendoncare, this time the Castle Club at Mudeford Wood Community Centre in Christchurch.
After my experience the last time I delivered this talk for a Brendoncare club, I was wondering how it would be received at thisone but the 20 ladies there were a very good audience from the outset and it went really well so I was pleased to put that previous talk and what I felt was an off-form performance at Havant & District Writers' Circle the previous week behind me.
Public Speaking Tip #290: If you have a few below par speaking engagements in a row - for whatever reason - you will find that a) the sequence won't last and b) it really focuses your mind and improves your performance.
After my talk, a couple of the members turned out to be very funny storytellers themselves with a couple of hilarious anecdotes, one about a restaurant's incredibly mean discount offer after waiting staff tipped snails all over a diner and the other about a lady's first (and probably only) all-over massage!
Salisbury Strain
Sarum U3A AGM, Salisbury
On 18 March, I set off to deliver another talk for Sarum U3A in Salisbury (always a great audience).
Once again, it was an example of how the biggest stress of public speaking for me is not the business of standing up in front of an audience but rather the journey trying to get there!
An accident involving a single car on the A338 Spur Road into Bournemouth led to Dorset Police closing off that section of the dual carriageway - for nearly fours, for some reason, a decision which led to a great deal of negative local press for them. This meant that the Wilts and Dorset X3 service was diverted on its journey into town before it could pick up passengers going back into Salisbury. It was therefore 30 minutes' late and as we travelled to Salisbury, we passed a massive tailback the other way, despite it now being two-and-a-half hours since the accident. I wonder if any of those people had presentations to get to?
As with the problems caused by the snow in February, there was nothing anyone could do.
Public Speaking Tip #301: Just occasionally, a booking to speak will be affected by factors that are beyond anyone's control. All you can do is focus on your doing your best when you get there if you are late - or on your next engagement if this one is cancelled.
I was met at Salisbury bus station by Ena and Tony Baldock. Ena has booked me for a large number of talks in Salisbury over the years, not just for the U3A. She is also a writer herself, having edited an authoritative book for bereaved parents.
The meeting was held in the hall behind St Francis Church. Here I am just after arriving, looking a little drawn! But after relaxing with a cup of coffee from Ena, I was well into 'speaker mode' and, when the 15-minute AGM meeting was over, I was introduced. I did about 35 minutes on The Power of Humour in Everyday Life and the audience of around 120 were terrific, as always.
Afterwards, I sold booklets, chatted to members and looked at the impressive displays of the various U3A sections' activities. I didn't spend too much time looking around Salisbury as I usually like to when I am in the area because I had to be back in Bournemouth for an afternoon session coaching a speaker...
The show went on - respectfully.
UNITE, Christchurch
The second week of March was my busiest for speaking engagements for quite a while. The first booking was a return visit to UNITE, the former National Federation of Royal Mail and BT Pensioners, where I last spoke last August.
When I arrived at Hoburne Naish, I was greeted by their Secretary Laura who informed me that their Speaker Secretary, Mr Rex Button, had passed away at the weekend. I was very sorry to hear this as I always enjoyed speaking to him on the phone and he had been very helpful in looking up travel arrangements for me. I had noticed that I hadn't received his customary call a few days before the meeting just to confirm that I was still coming; now I knew why.
The topic he had booked me to speak on this time was The Power of Humour in Everyday Life and so I immediately asked Laura if she felt this was still appropriate, especially as many members would only hear the news about Mr Button during the business meeting before my presentation. She was most insistent that he would have wanted this talk to go ahead.
After the announcements, which included a minute's silence in Mr Button's memory, Laura introduced me and mentioned that I had been concerned about whether my talk was still suitable. The audience loudly concurred that it was.
This is important because last summer, a reader posted a comment on this blog questioning what would happen in the theoretical case of an audience being informed of someone's passing just before a humorous speaker was introduced. I think this real-life example proved that my answer to the comment was correct!
Public Speaking Tip #295: If a change of circumstances, such as a committee member's death, occur between your accepting a booking and the day of the event, you should ask whether your talk will still be appropriate. You will nearly always be told that it will bring welcome relief.
But...
Public Speaking Tip #296: If you are going ahead with a speech after a change of circumstances for your audience, you might want to review your material in case any item now seems in poor taste.
During the business meeting, I very quickly reviewed my material looking for any humour which might seem insensitive. There was one story which definitely had to go, an anecdote about the passing of a famous film star. It always gets a huge laugh but there was no way I could use it on this occasion. But what item of similar length could I replace it with during a talk which I would be delivering in just a few minutes' time?
During my presentation for Havant Writers a couple of weeks earlier, I had 'premiered' an anecdote about the dangers of using puns. Although originally intended as part of a 'how-to' for writers, I realised that this tale has an appeal to a wider audience and fits perfectly into my Power of Humour... talk.
Public Speaking Tip #297: Is there some material from one of your specialised presentations which has a broader appeal, perhaps for a humorous speech?
I spoke to the audience of around 60 for about 35 minutes, the new story got a great laugh and the talk was well-received, especially in view of the circumstances.
Speaking havoc
Havant & District Writers' Circle
To explain what happened during the 24 hours before my talk to Havant & District Writers' Circle on 18 February, here is an edited version my column from the Radio Magazine Issue 881:
Don't talk to me about stations...
The plan was simple: I was going to catch the 21.12 from Bournemouth to Hove where I would be cat-sitting at my brother's place. It would also be useful to set off from there to Havant the following evening for a speaking engagement.
The first leg of the journey was fine, as smooth as, well, Smooth, but when I got to Southampton, my connecting service was cancelled due to some troubled soul throwing themselves onto the tracks at Barnham. Helpful staff put me on a train to Fareham where they were certain I could get one to Littlehampton and change for Hove... Well, with apologies to Glen Cambell, by the time I got to Fareham I'd be waiting - the service to Littlehampton was delayed. I got on it knowing I would miss the last connection to Hove and, not knowing what it would be like to spend a night on Littlehampton station, I got off at Cosham, rang my brother (who was now in Kent) from a phone with very limited battery, and he looked at timetables online and phoned hotels. There were no more trains heading Brighton way and the prices of the available hotels in the area didn't appeal so I decided to get another train - my fourth so far - to Portsmouth and spend the night waiting there until I could set off for Hove on the 04.35.
So, at the time when I should have been sitting down with a cuppa at Hove, I was standing reading a thriller in the ticket hall at Portsmouth station until some apologetic staff told me they were locking up from 1am until 3,30am so I had to wait outside. The book was a lot less scary than the next couple of hours as hundreds of drunken clubbers made their noisy way past the station (like my home town of Bournemouth, the night-time economy in Portsmouth even seems to thrive midweek). I hid around the corner behind a pillar, putting my rucksack, two carriers and laptop bag down on the ground within easy reach in case I had to flee. You can feel terribly protective towards a laptop, a bit like a baby, not that I've ever had one (and no, I'm not going to do the smirking, laddish '...As far as I know!' 'gag').
No drunks or police troubled me but boredom did. A radio would have been great, even to hear voice-tracked shows. Some presenters bring great enthusiasm to graveyard shifts, others less so. One jock I was writing for at a major station found himself stuck away in some slot in the early hours and banned from using humorous links - he was just required to say who the records were by (a style brilliantly described to me by another presenter as 'voice on a stick'). He sent me an email saying 'To find myself, after all these years as a virtual tech-op - well!' (I didn't even know what that meant back then but he wrote so plaintively that I felt his pain).
I'm no stranger to spending boring nights outside stations. I once got stranded outside Southampton Central on the way back from some gig or other with a strange man who had three topics of conversation: lighthouses, the Isle of Wight and the history of the Dr Marten boot. He had never actually been to the island, which has lighthouses, because he was convinced that it was some sort of wilderness with no shops for the locals (how do those Isle of Wight Radio jocks manage?)
That was one summer - this was winter, cold and rainy (great when there's nowhere to pee!) I have never known time drag so slowly, even when listening to Bohemian Rhapsody, but, eventually, some cleaners opened the station (five minutes late), I bought another ticket from the machine, got on the 04.35 (which was also five minutes late), changed at Havant (knowing I'd be back there thirteen hours later for my talk), got to Hove, fed a very hungry cat then slept a couple of hours before I had to get up, vacate the house because the estate agents were bringing someone to look around, and take myself off to a cafe to write that day's radio topicals which I then couldn't send because my newly-charged Blackberry had no signal.
There were only 28 days in February 2009. It seemed like more.
Not exactly the best preparation for a speaking engagement, was it? Furthermore, on the train back to Havant that evening, the passengers were packed in like sardines due to cancellations and delays caused by two more suicides in the South East. Conditions became less crowded as we got nearer to Havant and I arrived at the Arts Centre in good time.
There were 24 there and they were a good audience for my 90-odd minutes of content and question-and-answer but, after the problems beforehand, I didn't feel that this was my best performance.
Public Speaking Tip #289: Sometimes events which are totally beyond your control in the run-up to a speaking engagement can affect your state of mind on the day. You could cancel at short notice and let everyone down - or turn up and do your best anyway. A brief, humorous explanation to your audience can help everyone!
During the interval, I gave a short, impromptu, pre-recorded radio interview to Heather James for Portsmouth's Express FM. Heather is a great character, a broadcaster, speaker, blogger and writer for the Portmouth News (their longest-running female columnist) who I first met in 1998 when she booked me to speak to a very good motivational group she was running. She also came to my last talk for Havant Writers in 2002.
This was the most rapid-fire interview I have ever given but the fact that I already knew the presenter really helped me (plus the adrenaline halfway through a talk) and I felt that it went really well.
I used this talk as an opportunity to finally try out a new anecdote about how the over-use of puns can have unfortunate consequences. I've had plenty of time to prepare it - it relates to something that happened during a speech by a teacher when I was at school! It went well and I will be keeping it.
This writers' circle is very lucky to have the successful novelist Dee Williams among its members. Here is her latest book.
Testimonial from Sue Shade, their Membership Secretary, who also arranged transport back to the station for me:
"On behalf of the Havant Writers' Circle, I'd just like to say thank you for an entertaining and informative evening last night. I thought it went well, and I hope you enjoyed it too".
Well, not as much as I could have done with less stress beforehand! And afterwards, for that matter, as there were more delays on the journey back to Hove. When I got in, I slept for twelve hours!

Existing customers are valuable
Many organizations always look for new customers to purchase their products. They neglect to maintain their existing customer base. Existing customers are of real value to an organization as they provide a sound customer base and when there is strong loyalty from existing customers, new customers simply walk in!
What is special about existing customers? Well, they are pretty much aware of your product or services and how you function. They know your policies. Take for example, a clothes store, existing customers go into the store and just pick up what they like because what they purchased earlier suited them and they were happy with their earlier purchase. You don’t need an ad to make them walk over to the store. This is very unlikely with new customers.
When you take steps to understand the profitability of your existing customer base, you can identify the behavioural and lifestyle aspects of potential new customers. This will help you to correctly focus your marketing strategies on which prospects can bring in the most business to you. For example if your business is catering to the upper class section and you want to cater to the next strata here, you can predict their behaviour and requirements from your existing customer base.
What all this concludes to is that your existing customers are a valuable source of information to you on how well your business is doing and how well it is catering to customers’ needs and requirements. One thing about existing customers is that they will not tolerate decline in quality. If your existing customer base starts declining, it is a direct reflection of your product or service quality having gone amiss.
How a biz coach can help your set your biz goals
A Business coach is a professional who will motivate you towards achieving the goals you want to accomplish. One of the most important services you get from a business coach is that they listen to what you have to say. They find out what you want to achieve and show you the way to do this.
Most people who are managers or organizers are hard task masters or hard core professionals. A business coach is none of these. A business coach is a person who seeks to give you insights on how you can achieve your goals using your perspective.
When trying to understand your goals, they help you to set the right kind of goals. Very often your perspective of what is really required for betterment has to be sharpened through a third person’s perspective and this is what a business coach does for you. Since the business coach works to help you towards your goals from your point of view, you establish a quick connection with the coach and this in turn helps you to trace out the path you need to follow to achieve your goals.
One of the most important aspects needed to achieving goals is being organised and following a work structure that ensures success. A business coach will help you to become more precise in the way you do things. If you have a set of skills, which you have not used so far or which you would like to put to use, the business coach will show you how to do this and about how you can tune them to help you achieve you goals. Gradually you will find your abilities exceeding expectations.
By taking business coaching services, you are able to set goals in those areas where you truly want to evolve and grow. If you do not carry out what you are supposed to be doing to achieve your goals, the coach will hold you accountable for your actions and this means you simply have to improve yourself.
Through business coaching services you find yourself becoming more professional and taking up new opportunities. You cut down on unnecessary expenses, hire better employees or simply look at issues from a different angle. This helps you to achieve you goals faster and in a more efficient manner.

Two VERY important climate-related inquiries, one on the carbon permit scheme, and the other broader, both fairly rushed… so get cracking on one or both depending on where your expertise and passion meet. The inquiry into the CPRS bill closes for public submissions by 2009-03-18. You have a week to get them to economics.sen@aph.gov.au The wider inquiry [...]

Tim Ferris has a great article on the art of negotiating. This is something I’ve never been good at — it’s an uncomfortable skill to learn, but it can definitely be worth it!
Here are his five basic principles, in order of use:
- Negotiate just prior to the other side’s deadlines.
- Make them negotiate against themselves.
- Use a “flinch” whenever someone mentions their first discounted offer.
- Increase value while lowering price.
- Never be the ultimate decision maker.
- Use intelligent “bracketing.”
- Practice using the “firm offer.”

I found an interesting article on WSJ.com that I wanted to share. It's about taking older fashion items and repurposing them in new ways to mirror current fashion trends. The video from the piece helps give you an idea of what this is about.
The overall point about not buying new stuff initially got my attention, but I think a bigger point (unaddressed in the article) is what brands can do to respond to this. On one level we're talking about people not buying as much stuff as they used to, and why on earth would we want to encourage that. But I think there's opportunity in tapping into the notion of working a new purchase into what you already have, helping the consumer get the most from his/her overall collection of items, buying something will stand the test of time and go with lots of other things, etc.
This is a great time to revisit the idea of brands adding value for consumers. If what they want is the ability to make their dollars go further, let's help them with it. And not just by discounting the uber-trendy.
Instead of just pushing new for new's sake, I wonder if a new spin on purchasing would work better in these troubled economic times.

We have been asked by the BBC to circulate the following info regarding Children In Need Committee vacancies:

The Northern Regional Committee is the key mechanism for advising the Trustees on which organisations should be funded by BBC Children in Need in the North of England, an area which covers Yorkshire & Humber, North Lincolnshire, the North East, the North West and Cumbria.
This is an opportunity to ensure that BBC Children in Need funds projects which fulfil its mission to positively change the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in the UK and that funds are distributed across the Northern Region in an effective and objective manner.

year for Committee Members rising to 10 in the second and final year.

Help Reduce The Carbon Footprint And Cut Business Costs

We all have a duty to help in reducing carbon emissions as well as encouraging good work place practices that reduce waste and extravagance. The HR function should help lead the way by pro-actively encouraging the business and the workforce to adopt some simple measures to make reductions.
Here are some simple ways in which the business and the environment can benefit.
a. Switch it off - Switch off unnecessary lighting - with the lighter days do we need that light or is it just for effect? Where lights are not needed for productive work or for health and safety reasons then make sure they are turned off. This will reduce costs and reduce the heat generated in an office
b. Reducing monitor waste - Is that computer turned off? Don’t just let your laptop hibernate or your work station tick over, turn it off. At night when you leave the office do you check to make sure that both the hard drive and the monitor are switched off? The number of monitors that hum along on stand by eating up power all night is colossal. Turn it off!
c. Turn it off last thing - Have an employee designated to check the building last thing to make sure that equipment that does not have to be switched on or on stand by is turned off. Make sure that the lights are turned down and heating is kept to a minimum.
d. Temperature control - Ensure that all radiators have individual thermostats that actually work. This will enable the heat in a room to be adjusted for ambient temperature to suite the individuals working in that room. Make sure that they some sort of default maximum setting so that heating costs are reduced.
e. Is that journey necessary? - Think before making a business journey, could it be done in a better way. Is it necessary at this time or can it be combined with another journey? Can video/telephone conferencing be used instead?
f. Do you have to use a vehicle?- If the destination is close can you walk, could you cycle - is that practical? By allowing more time to go to close locations many may be in walking range. The benefit then is at least two fold - healthy exercise and cost reduction.
g. Is that printed copy needed? - Why do we seem to have to print every thing that is sent when an electronic copy and back up would almost certainly suffice? The amount of paper that is wasted is considerable and with paper and print costs climbing thing before you print.
h. Was that photocopy required?- How many of us take an extra copy just in case and what is the cost to business as well as to the environment? Try to think electronically. If a copy is needed for a meeting can it be sent electronically first and perhaps just one copy available at the meeting. Attendees could share information copies to reduce the number needed.
i. Is that printer necessary?- a good way to help reduce printing costs is to cut the number of network printers and stop buying individual desk printers. Undertake an audit of the staff who really need a printer, they should be only the ones who have to print confidential information and even then only those who need to do it on a regular substantial basis. Think electronically and reduce costs.
j. Stop web surfing- Many business costs are compounded by individual staff surfing the web for their own purposes at work. There is a considerable cost in lost time but many of these web searches result in reams of paper being used for helpful hints and advertising and holiday searches. Be firm, be fair but put an end to it. It’s costing the business money in many ways and HR must act positively to discourage this waste. Let the staff web surf from designated PCs only and make sure that they are not linked to a printer! The internet is for business use and so only needs to be accessible to a few people who need it to maintain the client service at acceptable levels.
These are just a few of the hints and tips that are available all across the business network. HR needs to help business cut costs and maintain margins as the credit crunch hardens. Think ‘is something really necessary, is there a better cheaper more environmentally sound way of doing something or providing some information?’ Prepare a policy and send it electronically to your staff. Explain the sense of reducing print costs both in hard and soft ware.
It is the role of HR to act in the best interests of the business look for savings, consider reductions and recommend positive steps.
